Hmmm I don't seem to be having much joy with glass of late - first, the rear window in the modern-ish shattered a couple of weeks back

and while at Alderhey last week, the switch for the driver's electric window decided to self combust while I was driving along. Then the quarterlight pivot broke on the Cambridge. Grrrrr Mad

How did it shatter?
A friend of mine had the same thing happening to his anglia 105E some months ago. Left it covered in the garage for a ccouple of weeks as usual and when he went and uncovered it found the rear screen shattered?
We can't actually understand what happened!!!! Confused

I remember a story of a car which for no apparent reason broke a windscreen whilst sitting in a garage. A new screen was fitted and a few weeks later the same thing happened. Upon further investigation it was found that the edge of the metalwork had a tiny piece of metal that was sticking out further than it should, when the car was in the garage and the sun shone, heating the garage, the metal expanded with the heat which was enough to shatter the screen. The fitter filed the shard off, fitted another screen and there was never a problem again.

Of course modern cars with bonded screens should not suffer this problem but I do remember washing a modern about 3 or 4 years ago when the sun was out and I finished with a crack down the middle of the screen. I put it down to hot glass and cold water Confused

Ah, washing cars again. No good will ever come of it, if you leave the dirt for long enough it falls off Wink

My Iveco motor home suffered a cracked screen for no apparent reason and when I asked the screen repair guy he said it was a common problem with bonded glass and putting the body under stress, something as simple as the multi story car park where you have to go round on a helter-skelter type road or even a very winding road cornering from left to right most glass now is 2 thin sheets of 2mm glass you may get a tiny crack in one sheet and not notice it until it has crept all the way up Rolling Eyes
I changed all the rear glass in my G wagen for laminated from a local glazier because of my job and carrying expensive laptops around with sensitive information on. Luckily the G has all flat glass Cool
