Like many others I do have call to roam around a little during the day and since the cost of petrol has risen from merely expensive to downright extortionate, I have been forced to modify my driving habits a little.

Motorway speeds used to be 80-90mph typically, I say this openly as it was a case of keeping up with the flow, and usually those were the speeds that were called for to do that. Since the cost of petrol has risen so sharply I now cruise at 65- ish on motorways and find I'm no longer the only one to do so!

In town 30mph in fifth gear has become the norm, fifth being short shifted to as quickly as is practicable.

Now, as our rulers have been obsessed for years by the mantra 'Speed kills' I wonder if the recent government figures for traffic accidents will reflect the trend that many drivers who are now driving slowly to eke out their petrol, are also crashing less? Will the statistics show a dramatic fall in accidents?

I also found it interesting to note that one city council has now declared speed cameras to be little more than revenue generators, this declaration coming belatedly after the government itself began pocketing the booty of fines instead of that particular council.
As the cracks begin to show in Britain's government, and between it, and it's hitherto willing cohorts, I wonder what other 'myths' may be exposed as simply money making gambits?....Global warming anyone?

This country is twice the size of the UK, but with very roughly 1/8th of the population. In other words, we have a lot less cars per road than the UK. Speed limits are draconian to say the least. What would be a 60mph in the UK is usually 40mph (70kmh to be exact). So people drive slower.

In spite of this, according to the latest figures that I have seen, there are more fatal accidents here than in the UK. So I guess that might answer your question.

I believe that one of the things holding back "free" power, wind, sun and tide, is that "They" have not yet worked out how to sell annual price increases to the consumer. I can hear them now... "Of course the price of North wind has risen dramatically this year". I remember North Sea gas was going to be that cheap, it would not be worth send you a bill
