I wont get too political , But do you think that "pay as you go" road tax (and possibly insurance ) may be a good thing for the classic car owner ? Could it be that it may work out cheaper to do it this way than have a full years tax (after 1972) or insurance . If anybody knows more about this I would like to hear it. cheers "MO"

Maybe the problem with the pay-as-you-go, would be the cost of administrating millions of payments each month.

I guess increasing general fuel duty covers the admin but you might end up with a load of old wrecks occupying public road space.

I have believed for many years that there is no need for road tax and even less need for tax banding.
Big thirsty car X driven miles = your fair amount of tax.
Small economical car X driven miles = your fair amount of tax.
The same applies to busy routes. If you use them at the busiest times your MPG suffers. You cannot avoid paying the tax. It is so simple so why don't they do it?
We could have a MOT sticker the same as the French CT. Both MOT and insurance are on the database, so the Police will know who is legal. I am not being political, but the only reason I can think of is......... They would make how many redundant? So which Political Party would be brave enough to make those government employees redundant?
