Just after the war we used to spend idyllic (but spartan) holidays at Greatstone. In a caravan loaned from a friend of my grandfathers.
My most abiding memory is of a spring in the bed that would stick in my back and wake me up in the night; a problem my parents and younger brother didn't seem to suffer.
We used to collect our water in a white enamel bucket (when did you last see one of those) and cook on a Valour paraffin stove, which took 45 mins to boil a kettle of water.
The only touch of luxury: the use of a farmyard toilet, some 500 yds away. The Romney,Hythe and Dymchurch minature railway ran almost alongside us making it the nearest thing to heaven for a couple of weeks. before returning to, war ravaged, London.
