Hi
Looks like a BSA scout to me 9 hp sports car. mid 1930's?
Made by BSA Cycles LTD rather than Birmingham Small Arms Co. LTD.
They made 1100 V-twin air cooled overhead valve engines for the Birmingham Small Arms Co. LTD.
Was it front wheel drive?
I have a little more info, if you want it, pm me your email, and I will scan you what I have tomorrow evening.
Cheers

I know nothing of that particular car, but when I lived in NZ in the late 60's, a chap who owned a BSA car of about 1935, came to me because it was 'freewheeling', and he could not pass its 'Warrant of Fitness' test.
I crawled underneath (I was very slim in those days) and saw an odd lever on the side of the gearbox. There was some fencing wire that had apparently broken, wound through the eye of the lever. I fiddled with the lever, worked out where the fencing wire had attached to the body, put in a new piece of wire and Bingo! no more free-wheeling.
Maybe some knowledgeable person can now tell me a bit about that model BSA. _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |

Yup, B.S.A. Scout, the four cylinder side valve fitted to this model is very similar to the Coventry Climax. The engine, gearbox and diff are fitted in reverse so to speak, because it's front wheel drive. Removal the engine starts with taking off the front wheels, & taking out the drive shafts. The gearbox and diff can be removed in one lump. The starting handle turns the engine through the gearbox so there is 4 compressions per turn of the handle. I had a three-wheeler once and I might add that it was the worst car I have ever had the misfortune to own. Not sure if the Scout ever had the V twin engine fitted as standard. The bonnet louves are on a raised panel if a V twin is fitted. _________________ To Hell with ambition, it drives a man mad, I can scarcely wake up to be fed. |

Here's one that has one or two modern add-ons.
The gear lever is an incredible affair that sits between the driver's legs and circumnavigates round the offside of the engine to get to the gearbox.

Oh yeah, I'd forgotten about that gearlever between the legs. 3 speed box, so reverse is where first would be on a normal 4 speed box. What fun I had when setting off after absent-mindedly putting it into reverse thinking it was first. _________________ To Hell with ambition, it drives a man mad, I can scarcely wake up to be fed. |

Only the rear wheel drive cars were built at Daimlers factory.
The front wheel drive cars were all designed and built at Small Heath under the direction of Fred Hulse.
I notice the car pictured has odd wheels, wire on one side and later all steel wheels on the other side.
I own two BSA cars one 1932 Trike and a 1931 four wheeled aircooled car undergoing a rebuild.
I have just gone on a hundred and thirty mile rally with the Trike, only problem, brake fade down hills in Wales. She climbs very well for her age.
I see I have been driving her since 1973 and have travelled far and wide.
Of course a vehicle this age needs constant fettling, greasing, oiling and minor adjustments.
Regards Kels. |
