By a country mile....the late Chic Murray. And it is transport related because he told the one about his wife getting her nose stuck in the tram lines Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing
There is a video of him on you tube in Aberdeen in 1984 and it is hilarious. There will never be another with that sense of humour. Laughing Laughing Laughing

TC came to mind here too.

I can't stand 99% of modern 'comedians', or 'comedy' programmes nowadays, I must be turning into a grumpy old curmudgeon Smile I'm not saying all old comedians are better than the new ones, eg although he pre-dates me I've never really 'got' Tony Hancock

I could never see what was funny about Hancock either.
Billy Connolly has got better now he is getting older.

Maybe I'm old fashioned as well, and a grumpy old curmudgeon (according to the memsahib) but I've never been able to watch more than 30 sec's of Little Britain? The amount of people amused by "Gay" humour never ceases to amaze me. I used to like Frankie Howerd and sometimes chuckle at Larry Grayson but this 'in your face' modern stuff makes me uncomfortable; It's not even funny... is it?

There are no really good stand up comedians now like Chic Murray or Les Dawson or Tommy Cooper. I never liked double acts either like Morecambe and Wise or Cannon and Ball to name two.
I tend more to go for the likes of Still Game. Pity they have split. Still most of their shows are on You tube. When the telly is crap ( which it normally is ) I go upstairs and watch you tube and get a laugh.

Tommy cooper absolutely great, Les dawsons old ladies or playing a piano badly fantastic. I got to meet LD quite a few times as he was a great Jaguar Cars fan and would often come to the shows and display his own cars with us at the JDC stand
Cool

I always liked Benny Hill.Risque, but not dirty.
Most modern comedians seem to have learnt their craft in the gutter, with every second word being a four-letter one.I'm not a prude, but those types make me cringe.
I always had trouble following Les Dawson,he talked so fast,by the time I got it,he was on another joke Embarassed
There was a program in the early seventies which featured LD,Clive Dunn and two others I can't remember. They had to talk on a given subject for one minute.Great stuff.
Hancock was ok in some, not so much in other programs. An acquired taste,i would think.
David Jason was great as "Grenville Arkwright",but I was never a fan of his "Del boy" character.
Ronnie Barker was much better in "Open all hours"than in the "Two Ronnies".
The funniest part I always thought was the short one's monologue at the end of it.
Although the "Piggy Malone" sketches were priceless.
Having said all that,we live in a different time, and tastes differ. It would be a dull world if they didn't.

One of the funniest things I ever saw was Jasper Carrot's "mole" sketch on TV, I thought I was going to die I was laughing so hard - we don't see much of him up here in Scotland now.

Max Miller is a particular favourite, as are many of the war time and post war comedians, and I have yet to tire with the men who were the Goons.
