It could be a Birmingham made Eccles.

it reminds me of an old Eccles I found in North Wales, some years ago. I must have a look to see if its still there or not! the elderly owner was threatening to roll it down to the bottom of his garden, and put a match to it

referred to andrew jenkinsons book of caravans 1919-59 and thought it looked like an Eccles Alert of approx 1949 , but looking further back at a Jubilee Butterfly of 1939 is also similar , the roof of both have a more arched form than in the pics here though. but i would go for the Eccles Alert. gordon Smile

G'day Moggy,

Is it a Winchester Imp maybe .... and are you going to save it Question

If that's what it is it would be worth the effort (and expense) to
take it back to it's former glory as long as you can do
much of the work your self, do you know what
year model it is Question

Hi cobber, still digging on this one Smile , first thoughts was a Willerby, but this shape of van was popular in the early to mid 50's and was made in small numbers by verious makers, for the then expanding touring caravan market,

i can say that it was built for the lower end of the market ,and the fittings inside are not really up to the standards of a Winchester, or Eccles of that period sorry Exclamation Smile

G'day OVM,

Well.......... if you're still uncertain what this one is I
think I better pull my head in, shame it's such a mess... the 'van
that is.... although me heads not great either Rolling Eyes

It looks like the roof was masonite... would that have
been covered by doped canvas in its day ?

Well hello and a big THANKYOU to the members on here and with PMs who has made comments and sent fotos and the interest on the old van .I still havn`t a clue as to age or make, One way it looks like a willerby then i think the curves on bottom left and right as you look at it broadside on (design ways ) are a bit big and look just like on the eccles design but then the windows throw me off as all pics i have seen on eccles the bottom of the windows start from the beading that runs from left to right in the middle. As you see these ones start a bit higher. When we found this old lady looking sad and went to investigate it, i was i think a bit too excited and never went deep enough into it with the owner,Well on this sunday we are going to visit him again and look more intense at it and see if we can find anything that tells us what it is as well as take more fotos hopefully manage to get inside ,As you probably have sussed out the wife has now come round to me having it to restore not that she doesn`t like it as she does "thank god" The caravan isn`t as bad as it looks to me but being a cabinet maker by trade and joiner it will be much easier for myself and also cheaper to do ,So yes i am going to get her and restore her with my wifes blessing .( thats half the battle over eh -lol ) . The man did tell me though that he bought it for £50 five years ago and was going to restore it ,Also i think he said he knew the bloke ,so i am going to ask him to see if he can get any info maybe old fotos of her anything that may help identify her. If any of you out there think i should ask anything else that i may not have thought of please say .Can`t remember if the roof had felt on though i suspect it has judging by the fotos,.It does have tonge and groove floorboards as i felt to see underneath.Any other ideas or pictures for comparison will be much appreciated, so please keep digging as i am and maybe between us all we can crack it.Must go for now and once again Thanks to you all.

You can see an Eccles on this site under the links to the Morris J Van see
http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/morris_j_van.htm
This picture was taken at the Eccles factory in Birmingham. As Moggy says the windows start at the moulding but also the roof is of the pitched or'boat' style.

Hi,Everybody just a small update on identifying this van .I have scanned in 2 pictures from the caravan Mag of March 1948, One is of a caravan and i wander if mine is off the same "family" Due to wide curved shape and the windows set higher as well as the one right next to the door. And the second one is of a cooker identicle to the original one in the caravan, as this is advertised in the mag as the latest in caravan cookers i wander if this is an indication of age of the van.I would like to know if any of you good people out there as well as the ones who has answered could pass on there opinions as to wether they think i am on the right lines or not, As i have sifted through 3000 pictures give or take a few and all the mags i have and these two pictures are the only thing i can find that has or maybe has to do with this caravan .I have already gave her a name as PEGGY short for my wifes name.
On sunday i may know some answers as i am going to see the man who gave it to me and see if he knows anything or can get the information i am seeking
