|
|
Rob contacted me, wondering if I had any information on an OHV conversion that he is fitting to his vintage Morris Cowley. Does it ring a bell with anyone here?
------
Dear Sir,
I have an OHV cylinder head conversion made for a pre 1930 Morris Cowley or
Oxford side valve engine, It has two inlets and four exhaust ports. There
is a circular brass plate on the head "Manufactured by The Norman Engineer
Co. Ltd. Lemington Spa".
Can you tell me anything about this head. Was it the head that was supplied
by Jones and Shipman Ltd which is mentioned on page 1140 of The Motor
magazine dated 3rd January 1928. I have contacted Jones and Shipman in
Leicester and they have no knowledge of it.
The head is to be fitted to a pointy tail Morris Cowley Sports.

I don't know if it's in any way relevant but in "The Bullnose Morris" by Jarman & Barraclough there's mention of Cecil Kimber's MG built in Longwall, Oxford in 1925. It was a special Cowley with an 11.9 HP OHV Hotchkiss engine. Head and ports were polished, it had a special carburettor and an oil pump of increased size that gave a max. pressure of 60 psi.
The car was was fitted with a light two seater body and could do 82 mph. It won a gold medal in the 1925 MCC Land's End Trial.
