Rick,
It's an OHV engine with a mechanical fuel pump. I'm guessing Austin A30.

Looks very much like the engine blocks I used to pull from my Minis back in the 70's.
The large Hex nut on the right holds the Oil Pressure relief valve.
The aperture bottom left was for a mechanical fuel pump.
Top Left, the flat area that juts out used to carry a plate with the engine # on.
I believe the A series block casting went through a series of changes.

Austin A30, A35 or A40 mk1. On another note, there's one just like this (A Series engine) abandoned in some woods near me, along with the remains of the car! All that's left really is the engine, gearbox, front suspension and wheels, and the back axle. I'll see if I can take some pictures tomorrow, and I'll post them in the derelict cars section.
