I really hate to be the bringer of bad news. Some of you may already have heard and are sobbing quietly in your bedrooms. I hardly know how to tell you… but here goes:

Barratt Sherbet Fountains. Ah! That’s got you’re attention. The yellow paper tubes containing heavenly powder and a stick of liquorice to coax it out with.

I remember them being one of the first sweets available after the WW2, costing around three old pence. My children grew up with them and now my grandchildren also enjoy them. They are an institution, an unchanging link with the past. So what have the manufacturers done? Ditched the soggy paper wrapper and replaced it with a redesigned plastic tube! As if we needed more plastic.

The full horror has yet to sink in. But I blame the government.

(I know this is not transport related but I feel everyone should be told.)

Don.

Shocked Shocked That's disgraceful. They will probably put it down to global warming as with everything else. meanwhile, spare a thought for poor Ainsley Harriot - his sausages were allegedly on sale in Ireland, but look at the picture then the wording on the bottom of the packet

But some how it is better than being a forking prick.

The most amazing piece of advice I have ever seen was on a box of muesli in the USA (where else?) - "Why not try tossing over your favourite breakfast cereal".

Sherbet fountains...used to love them and the ones with the lollipop in them.
I remember when Rodney Marsh played for England and Alf Ramsey was the straight laced manager he told Rodney that if he was having a bad game he would pull him off at half time. Marsh said that they usually get a cup of tea at half time at Man City. Needless to say he never played for England again. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Better than the sherbet fountain was Cremola Foam Shocked
Sadly it hasn't been manufactured for many years but was the staple diet of many a Scottish child

My Mum used to sell these around the stores in the 1950's.

I remember there were always plenty of Free samples.

Hi Peter

The kids around Bristol in the '60s, when my parents had a shop, used to like them solid, out of the freezer.
