Why do people change the engine oil but not the gearbox oil or diff. Why do people put the wrong spark plugs in an engine, do they think they are more clever than the manufacturer? Well do they? You should have seen the rubbish that came out of the CBR600's forks, it makes me want to spit. Do some people think that putting a few holes in an old air filter will make it OK, I say to the feeble minded bodgers - NO. Do the right thing or buy a Ford Mondeo. Um I feel better for that and my spleen is suitably vented.

Nik it apears that some are too idle to do a good sound job others have not enough knowledge and that can be a dangerous thing.when Iworked on bikes for a living i often had to pick up bent bikes [ 1936 350 norton float ] one very bent tiger 8o had a bottom girder fork spindle sheard the 18 year old rider had not survived .when checked by the authorities the spindle was found to be made from silver steel . I'm surprised no one mentioned that many years ago Ford thought rear axle oil changes were so unnecessary that they even stopped fitting a drain plug.

Interestingly, my Mercedes has a "sealed for life" gearbox. Then I started reading about Jaguar going back on that for their Merc sourced boxes and recommending an oil change every 60,000 so I spoke to the dealer. They changed the gearbox and diff oil and I'm glad I had it done - the colour was appalling. Engine oil is supposed to be every 12,000 but I do it at 6,000 just in case too, it being a dismal not petrol.

The oil in the diff came out in lumps and the gearbox was not much better. It is better to change it and be safe as most of our cars are well past their sell by date. Oil contains volatile components and "dries out" in time. "It is better to do it and not need it than need it and not do it" I think that was Confucus.
