At last I have spent some time on the rear brakes of my Austin Seven Special. All of my previous options evaporated when I found it was one of the older back axles, with the backplate riveted on. That meant the semi-Girling back plates could not be fitted. The only option left (apart from sourcing a later axle) was to recondition and adjust what I had.
The main problem seemed that the levers were trying to operate the shoes when they were past their ideal fulcrum point. Wear in the actuator and the operating end of the brake shoes seemed to be causing it.

Bodge time... I made up two little clips to fit over the actuating end of the brake shoes. The increased thickness bringing the levers back to a more effective position. I shall try it out tomorrow.

I thought that was a standard "bodge" garages used to do anyway - clips could be had from factors

I thought it might be. Had a car in the past with them on and that's what gave ne the idea. Didn't remember you could buy them, but I'm starting to forget things these days.
