Long before I got 'into' classic cars I had a couple of boats, nothing grand or fancy but they were fun and a great relaxing way to spend a weekend. Someday I would love to own a yacht or better still a motor sailer but sadly I fear that a lotto win would be required for that, so my boat passions run to the extent of some pictures I have. These have been sitting in my attic since moving to this house as my other half seen enough of them in our last home. I decided to give them an airing and put them up in the garage walls.

This is a picture by Willy Stower of what I believe to be a pre WW1 scene. The most prominent ship in the picture is the USS Indiana a 10,288-ton battleship, commissioned 1895.
Stower is a famous artist but I have never came across this picture or reference to it anywhere and that's why I've marked it as I would hate for it to be copied

This is a common print from the 40s by Gabriel Deschamps entitled 'The Harbour at St. Tropez' Modern reproduction prints of this picture are still available and the original you can buy for an estimated £10k to £20k

Finally for now this is a modern reprocuction of the Cutty Sark which when hanging on the wall actually looks like you are looking out through a window watching her sailing home

And the nice thing about the Cutty Sark was it was built at Dumbarton on the Clyde. Very Happy

On closer inspection, and I don't believe I missed these last night I have found another two names.
The ship to the starboard aft of the USS Indiana is the USS Iowa and to the starboard aft of the Iowa is the USS Puritan which seems to have been spelt wrongly as Puriton

Hi John,

If you fancied a small restoration job you could have the Cutty Sark's sister ship..

woowww it'd be a tragedy if that was broken up, given it's age and history

Such a shame for the Carrick Peter, I remember it as a floating cafe on the Clyde and my grandfather worked on her in the 50s.

I remember seeing her in a state of disrepair at Irvine many years ago and they were raising money for her then.

The American ships look like there part of the great world cruise of the American white fleet 1907 to 1909 undertaken by the Americans as "dig" at the Royal Navy lot of countries had emerging navys at that time (Germany, Japan etc) and all looked to Britian with envy and this cruise was a pr exercise to show how the Americans were aiming to be a world power. Up to and including the first world war we maintained what was known as a two navy policy ie our fleet was equal to any to other navies in the world put together a policy dating from Trafalger when we had to face the combined fleets of both France and Spain, this was undermined and destroyed by the 1920s Washington treaty said to stop countries Like Germany from ever building large fleet again but also forcing us to cut our fleet down by three quarters - instant equality for the Americans at the stroke of a pen with out having to build any more ships

To see what a ship of the same type as the American ships would have looked like here are a couple of good sites about the only remaining restored turn of the 20th centry pre dreadnaught battle ship left in the world Built in Britian for Japan and nearly identical to the British ships of the time
