Hi

So come on, what vans do people know of, that are a good hight and a goos length to be made into camper vans. Something that will do 40 or 50mph, so it can get to a few rallies!

Not too collectable, to make them very dear, and cheap to run/insure.

Prefere not to go down the ambulance route, as I have spent enough time in them recently!

Cheers

Dave

for what it would cost to convert a van into a camper, you might as well restore a camper

Commer, either Walk-Thru or the earlier type?
Now that I think of it,I don't remember seeing any preserved examples of the earlier version, apart from an ice cream vendor's vehicle. Were they particularly rot prone?
I do know a major parcels company related to the dutch railways(van Gend & Loos)had a huge fleet of them, and the later Walk-thru.Hence there are a few Walk-Thru campers about in Holland, but none of the early ones that I know of.
I've never seen one here in New Zealand at all, though Commer did sell trucks here right up to the Commander range.

Yes there are quite a few Commer campers in Holland. Apart from the "van Gend en Loos" Walk Thru, which usually clocked up high mileages and mainly are the four cylinders with the flat nose, many Walk Thrus were ordered by local Fire Brigades to act as a Tools & Equipment car or something. The nice thing about these former Fire Brigade trucks is that they were maintained very good and usually have very little mileage.

I rescued a 1961 six cylinder Walk Thru from a local scrapyard where it had just arrived, coming fresh from the Fire Brigade from a little town a few miles away. These cars were worth nothing at the time (about 1989). A friend bought it, we exchanged the dyamo and drove it for a few months. Then parked it in our shed where it still is..... The plan my friend had was to turn it into a camper but it got forgotten.

There are a few campers based on older Commers too. These also mainly are converted ex Fire Brigade trucks. Seems Commers were quite favourable with Fire Brigades in the late fifties / early sixties in the Netherlands!

How about something like this:
http://pheebay.com/1/?QBGOJ

Plenty of headroom, windows are already there, you just need to add some insulation and the fittings from an old caravan and you should even have room for the PF Very Happy . That is if it is not too new for you.
