Thursday 13th May 21:00 on BBC Four but bound to be repeated. Set your tapes and Sky boxes. Very Happy

Looks interesting, The museum is well worth a visit if you're up in Lancs.

Quote from BBC4 site: 'Series in which acclaimed filmmaker Richard Macer visits three different museums struggling to connect with a modern audience.

At the British Commercial Vehicle Museum in Lancashire, a mutiny is brewing over the appointment of a new leader. The museum is the last link to Leyland Trucks, one of the nation's great manufacturing giants, but just as Leyland fell victim to industrial action in the 70s and 80s now history is in danger of repeating itself at the Commercial Vehicle Museum too.

The first thing new leader Stephen Bullock wants to do is bring back the Leyland festival. For many years this was the town's way of celebrating its industrial might with a procession of lorries and buses, but after the factory closed the carnival was cancelled.

However, not everyone approves of these new changes at the museum. Some of the many longstanding volunteers are vehicle enthusiasts who think the museum should stay just the way it is. But will it survive if it doesn't change?

Macer spent six months filming amidst the gleaming lorries and double decker buses and observed as a bitter row erupted between the new leader and the head of the volunteers.'

Hi
Lots of events planned for this year.
http://www.bcvm.org.uk/events.htm

I have been told, by a friend who works for Lanc Fire and Rescue, that there is also to be an Emergency Vehicle event.

Is it a museum worth going to? It was interesting to see the programme, and the in-fighting that often tends to dog organisations like that. I agreed with the manager bloke about the display of old cameras - what was the point of that in a transport museum???

I only saw the second half of the program but the new manager appeared to win hands down. Having said that, in general I much prefer museums as they were in the 1950s rather than the more glitzy, appeal to everyone approach that exists today. It's just a shame that the volunteer leader wasn't prepared to present his arguments (if he had any) in front of the camera.

I agree I don't think we saw a fraction of what must have been bubbling away under the surface, to cause all those ructions...

The whole ethos I found depressing sadly, but in some ways is no more than is found in many car clubs too. I suspect that the ex-tax inspector, who seems to have lived a sad life with his mum all his life, was probably a right b****rd in his working days and seemed just to be a trouble maker, obsessed with his London bus. Moreover, did the recalcitrant attitude of some volunteers not come through redolent of the whole working attitude that destroyed the motor industry in what used to be a great inventive country? I lived near Jaguar for most of my working life, and watched a great company brought to its knees by strikes and petty attitudes. Management not being able to manage, (exactly the same here), lack of investment due to lack of profits, all of which led to the Japanese taking over the majority of our world's markets. Frankly, I despair for the future of what was once a very Great Britain. I quit the majority of car clubs of which I used to be a member for mostly the same reasons - petty bickering and people who had or have no real power in their everyday lives using the club to their own advantage. Theft of funds, profiteering, all at the expense of the membership. I guess we all know of such happenings. So sad.

I thought the program was interesting on many levels.I agree with the poster above, sadly many old car clubs and museums seem to attract silly little people with the petty attitudes of the "I'm in charge" ex tax inspector who featured in the progam.
I wonder if train or plane museums are the same?.

I was a technical officer for a hospital radio and it was just as described above. Some of us wanting to put the oganisation on a far more professional footing and the anoraks that wanted to keep it as a social club. Very frustrating and I resigned after a year.

In this series I didn't bother to watch the art museum one but the boat museum one seemed to show exactly the same infighting that was evident in the transport one. Anyone else watch it?

Yup I watched the boat museum one too, same old issues as at Leyland. The issues seem to arise when there are "Friends" and other associated groups that all need to co-exist with the people tasked with keeping the facility as a whole open.

(I wonder if train or plane museums are the same?.)

Trust me having been a volunteer at a well known steam railway I can tell you it is. some of the top people who had been members for years wouldn't even talk to young volunteers, I saw one young volunteer ask a senior member a question once and the senior member just looked down at him for a second then turn and walk off with out saying a word this was at the same time as this society was running a recruitment drive to encourage new volunteers!

Maybe some people as they retire find their lives rather empty and they find these museums and the like fill it. A lot then seem to resent anyone else even becoming involved.Maybe, for some of the older members it's the first time they've ever had any authority or felt important.
