A couple of VW's i used to drive around when working for a VW specialist. The van (Boris as we called it) is a morris 1000 van back end grafted onto to beetle chassis, a fastback twin carb engine was fitted which kept the load space. Lost touch with the van when it was sold to a simular company down in London.
The 2nd VW is a Trecker, great fun and both vehicles were excellent advertising agents.

Pete
It is a small world.
Boris, (or his identical twin with the same nickname) was being used in around 1989-1992 by Steve Hamilton VW Specialist in Southend. As late as 1997 it was still in the back of his workshop awaiting restoration.
My son was his Saturday boy from the age of 15, and got his love of air cooled German classics from Steve and now drives a Porsche 914. |

Hi Brian,
well that time period would certainly fit in with when Boris was sold. Would be interested to see any photo's of him in his present state? Certainly did a grand job for us, great load carrier and advertising platform, and great fun |

Wasn't someone asking about Beetles yesterday, then I came across this thread by accident! |

The VW 181,known as the "Thing" in the US,was developed with the idea of selling it to the army as a new "kubelwagen" concept, but the army rejected it.
It had the reduction hubs of the transporter on the rear, and was a sales failure in VW terms.
In later years,VW tried again with the "Iltis"model, and although the German army did take some, again it was not the success hoped for. |

Not quite true, around 50,000 were sold to NATO forces, including a small number to the BAOR. It had reasonable off road capabilities, in spite of its 2WD configuration.
In civilian terms it was rather more of a failure, being too expensive in the UK against 4WD competition.
I restored an ex Dutch airforce example a few years ago.
