Could anyone please provide the following information, for a project I'm working on?

1. What month in 1961 was the Mark 1 MG Midget launched?

2. Was it launched at a motor show or just quietly announced?

3. If at a motor show, which one?

4.What was the specification of the launch model? i.e. the colour, steel wheels or wires, LHD or right?

Many thanks, classic car fans. Over to you.

We went to the Spidget 50 meet 2 years ago as the first frogeye rolled off the production line 50 years ago. Over 1000 sprites and midgets turned up. Try the MG owners club,

Answer: June 1961

2. Was it launched at a motor show or just quietly announced?

Answer: Quietly announced

3. If at a motor show, which one?

Answer: N/A

4.What was the specification of the launch model? i.e. the colour, steel wheels or wires, LHD or right?

Answer: Not mentioned, but the test car in July was RHD, red and steel wheels

I can add that the car was launched at a tad under £700 and was £30 dearer than the new Sprite. 0-60 20.2 secs, maximum 84.7. Fuel consumption 33.4 overall. Can't do better I'm afraid.

PS Now found the original launch details in the 30th June 1961 Autocar. rather than the July road test. There are two cars shown both on steel wheels one with Ace wheel trims which were standard on the de luxe version. One was Tartan red the other old english white with black hard top which was the base version without the trims. The launch price was £689, 15/- 10d. The wheel trims were a £15 18/- 9d option on the basic model. These are the official launch photos supplied by MG, not the test car, so it seems there were two cars shown to the press at the launch. Hope this helps.

Lowdrag, I'd like to say a huge "thankyou" for the invaluable information you've provided...

Unfortunately, I can't say anything at the moment, as I've been stunned into silence by your fastidious answers.

Here is a picture of me, at the moment... Shocked

Many thanks,

Frank.

No problems. That's what we are here for. Incidentally, they were of course both RHD.

I doubt it is, but the car tested by Autocar18/8/61 has the number YJB 217. If it is though, and your friend wants a copy of the test, pm me.
