If you have a wooden 1930s caravan what paint do you use on the hardboard panels on the outside.House hold gloss ? And what paint would you paint the canvas roof with. thank you

A question I was asking not so very long ago, I have used an coach paint (alkaloid) available from www.craftmasterpaints.co.

using their undercoat first, assuming your boarding has already been sealed,and then the finish coat to achieve an quality finish which will last for many years. I had tried an cheaper version of alkaloid and found it to be very inferior.

I do not know what paint would be suited to an canvas roof.

Any oil-based paint will do the business.
Both on the walls and the roof.

Right here we go, the low down on painting a 30,s van, this is a tried and tested method used by myself and my friends on dozens of vintage vans ,

1 , Over the years i have tried several methods of applying paint ,
The coach enamel, yacht, narrow boat type paint, seam's like the best option but this paint is expensive,
And have found in my experiences to be no more durable than normal paint,
with 30's vans the paint needs to be flexible, as there is more movement in the body and panels , then say in a post war- vans,
2 surface preparation, to get the best results, all the beading will need to come off,
3 all surface area's need to be sanded back to a flat dry surface ( i use a DA sander with 80 grit paper ) any filling and repairs to be done at this stage
4 Refit the beading, bedding it down with a paintable silicone, ( this stays flexible even when painted )
5 Under coat, i use layland,Johnson's trade paint, this is available from , screw fix Wilkos etc ,
This is a thick paint and easy to work with ,work the paint into any small voids or cracks in the caravan body, i apply the paint with a 4 inch mini roller and a 1inch paint brush
6 Let the paint dry( the longer the better) sand down any rough spot's
Wipe the van over with white sprite and apply the main color's
again use Jhonson's exterior paint , use the mini roller 1 inch brush and a 2inch brush
Use the 1 inch brush to paint in the edges and the roller to fill in , the 2 inch brush is used to lightly over brush the wet paint in vertical strokes, this reduces the orange peel effect that the roller leaves, and gives a coach painted look
reapply the paint until you are happy with the depth of color
let this dry for a few days, the lightly key the surface with wet dry paper
again wipe the van down with white spirit
7 finally apply a coat of Johnson's yacht varnish this seals the surface and gives a deep shine to the paint , again reapply till happy with the finish

I've not used craftmaster paints, but I have had a lot of experience in the last few years using Williamsons. They are good at matching, and do a wide range of special paints (inc roof canvas paints).

there would be signal light, and a reflector this was just to illuminate the numberplate ,not until well after the war did brake and indicator's become compulsory OVM ..
by the by whats the van ?

Hi its the one off ebay trailer one.I am wanting to put better tyres on it.To travel faster than 30mph.They are 125x15 r can i get tyres to fit.Its going to be a project but when finish i will tow at the back of the my fire truck camper.Any idea what colour would be nice.
