Not sure if you are all aware that S.O.R.N. dose not move over with change of ownership

A friend has bought a Triumph Spitfire that was on S.O.R.N. with the previous owner till the end of this month.
He contacted DVLA to extend the S.O.R.N. for another year to be told he has to pay a £60 fine for not sornong the car when he sent the paperwork to change ownership, even though he didn't request road fund licence.

When he queried it he was told it was not on S.O.R.N. under his name even though their records show him as the new owner.

So beware if you purchase a car that is on S.O.R.N. reapply for sorn.

Roger

PS. dose this mean you don't have to be an owner to S.O.R.N. a vehicle.
I know a few I would like to see off the road. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Well-meaning advice on my part here, not definitive knowledge - but if it was me I'd at least appeal the decision in writing detailing his understandable mistake, focusing particularly on the fact that he went to SORN the vehicle the moment it fell due and the short interim period involved.

Quite honestly, and I speak from a lot of experience here, far too often the outcome of an telephone enquiry with the DVLA depends on who you get at the other end of their 'phone that day.

I reckon your friend has got nothing to loose except the price of a sheet of paper, an envelope and a stamp - and the plus side is he may even get his £60 back. Cool

I was aware of this, but not many people are, so be careful. Basically if the car has been on the road later than 1998, it has GOT to have SORN or be taxed, otherwise a fine comes through the post. I've always been very careful with taxing and sorning my cars, SORN takes 5 minutes to do online so there's no excuse really.

On a separate note, this morning a received the tax reminder for my old Citroen 2CV that I sold last month, the tax expires at the end of August. I received the letter through informing me I was no longer the registered keeper a couple of weeks back, so I think I'm ok? Confused

It does actually make it clear - I received penalty in exactly the same way 8 years ago when penalty first came in - however I had alreday declared SORN at the local PO and they had issued a receipt.

Examination of which revealed I had transposed (or the PO had?) two of the letters of the mark

DVLA cancelled it when I phoned up - they did not even want proof then
