I've wondered this since day 1, I could understand people joining up just to post one particular question, then disappear, but I don't get why sooo many people join, then never post, even once!??!?!?!?

After all, anyone can view the forums, so there's no need to join just to have a read. Or are they joining up just to PM one of the existing members, with no plans to post?

See this happening a lot on other forums.

The operator of OLLR sends out a warning to those that haven't used the forum for a long while and tells them that they will be deleted from the forum if they haven’t made a post in a while. They don’t like lurkers and want people to use it as intended. After a couple of weeks or whenever the deadline is, the none-users get deleted completely from the forum.

How many people have joined up to this Forum and not posted?

Just taking a quick poll, 200 new users have been set up since 28 March, of these 96 have never posted. Ok a handful were set up recently, and may not have had chance to call in yet, but the rest have been set up for a while.

Actually Rick, the other problem you have is that some of us never shut up!

Rick - you are not alone!

On my Safari Caravan forum with less than a tenth of the members you have, 40% have never posted and another 14% have posted only once.

Even more strange was when I sent my half yearly email to all members, 5 of the zero posters took the trouble to reply to me, but still haven't posted!

But at the recent Classic Caravan World Record attempt at Stapleford Park I met 10 of my forum members, and their enthusiasm more than made up for the lack of interest from almost half the total membership.

Mayhap they like a good read.

I don't post often, at least I think so.
But I get a lot of satisfaction reading through the forums.

But to join and not say Hi ?
A common courtesy would be to just say hello, even if you never post again.

I'll probably email a mailshot to everyone when the evenings start to draw in again, hopefully it'll gee up a few of the registered lurkers Smile

There could be a few people like myself, who don't actually own a classic, but enjoy reading about them and their owners experiences. I have made only about 40 posts in a year, because unless I have a real contribution to make, by drawing from my (fading) memory banks, you only tend to repeat what has already been said. Not having your own classic to maintain, means you will have few topics to start.

ExBMC has a good point.
I'm a 'member' & 'lurker' on several forums of various kinds. Some I've had to join just to see what's going on, some I can lurk on for free!

I wouldn't worry too much about 'lurkers' unless they cause some administrative work. It's probably true that in any society, capital S or not, only a few percent actually make a real contribution.

We have about 1200 Members of the Museum that I am most closely involved with; About 100 volunteer on a regular working basis AT the Museum & we'll see about 25 more at the two annual Members functions. For the rest, they'll (hopefully) make financial contributions, of course, and their very Membership keeps the Museum active.

I certainly agree with EXBMC,not having a classic to play with does make you a little withdrawn and being on the wrong side of sixty five--less financially well off to expect an early punt into the classic market.there is light at the end of the tunnel, but then the missus will arrange a welcome holiday and the noose tightens on the wallet!! still--it`s nice to see other forum members enjoy their toys and drool over past motors i should never have sold!! just found a load of cars on old photos that my dad purchased--will forward them to rick if i can master photobucket!!!

cheers----Ray the Rocker.....
