Last saturday went to a garage in another town to sell a newish car I had to a relative of the garage owner who had already viewed it and agreed on the price.
I had already heard of him being a clasic car lover and restorer but was not prepared to what I saw!!
Its like entering a small museum!!
There were an MGC, 2 spitfires (mrk 1 and 2), mini cooper mark 1, fiat topolino, a tr3 and then a lovingly resotred NSU scooter from the late 50s and an early lambretta 3 gears undergoing restoration, about half a dozen raleigh choppers in various states of restoration with one very original and complete, some nice 60s racer bikes, a j40 pedal car which was being restored for someone else, a restored j40 belonging to him which had been around 30 years outisde on some roof, and a collection of period wheels, advertising, bonnet mascots and badges and a very impressive collection of old Les Leston steering wheels, think there were close to a hundred!!!
Will be going back to purchase some parts for a fiat 124 which my cousin is restoring and he said he had some mechanical parts for my hunter!!
I am also in the process of starting a restoration on a raleigh chopper which I have had since the early 80s and he said he might still have some of the red paint he used on one which was a perfect match so all in all some good finds and a good time was had!

pick ups never had the original factory rear body here, new pickups were imported always as a chassis and complete cab bar the rear body and that was made locally so thats why its different to your uk variant, personally it would be much nicer with a factory rear body but to me it means maltese history just like the maltese buses which had their bodies built locally as well!!

Thanks rick I'd like to have a small pickup but doubt it could happen anytime soon, I dont have space for it and do not wish to part with any of my cars so unfortunately its a no!!!
eventually in the future I might be tempted to bid farewell to the hunter for something else but its not even ready yet so I shall put some miles on it before thinking of selling it!!

Sometimes importing comercial stuff complete would attract import tax. Just a thought.

Years ago in Malta I was approached by a man who owned a 1950s Panhard. It was in immaculate condition, but in Malta was worth only a fraction of its value in the UK or on the Continent. He tried to get me involved in some kind of fiddle to get the car out of Malta. He claimed that exporting any vehicle from Malta was banned.
Was he trying to con me? Or was it so? If not, have the rules changed?
I did not get involved anyway.
Jim.

how many years ago, do you remember?

Recently prices of classic cars have risen to an extent where for example a mark 3 spitfire needing TLC might get you to shell out around 6500 euros!!
so that panhard would be worth much more nowadays !!
however I am sure that now cars can be exported and many mark 1 escorts and capris (which were very common here) are being sold out to an english man who comes to malta every now and then, most probably getting them for peanuts and selling them over there for good money seeing the recent prices which they are fetching in uk!!

Hi Bob,
Probably about 1989 or 90. Cannot be sure, but very close.
I do remember that the hulk of the infamous Torry Canyon was moored in Valetta as a fuel storage tank if that helps to date it.
Jim.
