I'm in Pondicherry at the moment (south west India) was sure I'd see some of the Mk111 Morris Oxfords which have been branded as the Hindustan Ambassador, now with a 1.8l diesel engine, and was not disapointed as they are everywhere!
Then came across a Royal Enfield Bike (presume this was also based on a old model but with some modern bits?)
And there were many new BSA push bikes
Funny to see some real NOS

Hi Dave
Keep an eye out for Steam engines for me, if you find one, let them know I am interested!
There are a few out there.
Cheers

That's probably because it is, there's a factory making them in India.

Hi Dave, no problem!
Just remember I only have a 25kg luggage limit for the flight back !!
Not seen any trains yet, we flew into Mumbai , got an internal flight to Chennai, I do fancy fancy a train trip , could have got one from Chennai to Pondicherry, don't know whether it would have been a steam train, but it takes 8 hours, a bus for the same route takes only 3, so went for the bus.
The bus was my first experience of Indian driving, the style of which can only be described as suicidal chaos; overtaking when there is a lorry heading head to towards you is fine, as is pulling out from junctions when there is no gap, all drivers continually use the horn; to let other drivers know they are there, that said everyone does understand the rules and there is no road rage, driving is just a series of near misses, the likes of which a motorbike display / stunt team would be proud!
Many of the car drivers have their wing mirrors permanently folded in as "it gives them more space"! despite the fact that motor bikes will often overtake on the inside using the few inches of space between what they are overtaking and the kerb! the bike will often have a whole family on it, kids on the tank, dad riding and mum on the back sitting side saddle ; non of them with crash helmets.
I have taken a video, its a bit jumpy but will post a link when have shortened it!
