A few pictures of caravans from the 1920's and 1930's we've seen in museums across the Midlands over the past few months. My favourite is definitely the 1935 Royal Winchester (third picture down), loaned to the museum by a member of the HCC. I wasn't able to take any clear inside pictures due to the caravan being locked - the slightly blurred picture taken through the rear window was the best I could manage - but the interior is magnificent.

I thought that the Blue Diamond leaded window was an Angela giveaway? |

yep, sure is an Angela the blue diamond in the window was there trade mark,
From what i can see of your van it looks like it could possible be a late 20s Eccles , the steel A frame , the corner steadies, the shape of the windows, the recess for the fold down step, and the sheer size of the van (early 20s vans tended to be small, due to limited power of the tow cars availalbe at the time ) .. hi ovm,
am 99.9% sure that my van is a Cheltenham as the casting for the pin coupling has ' THE CHELTENHAM CARAVAN CO ' made in it.....
and it doesn't look like its been altered as the A frame is the exact shape to the coupling, no new holes or weld marks....
i havent found any info on a Cheltenham box van i would be intrigued if you have anything! |

Intersting, the reason i noted the steel A frame is in the twentys Eccles where i think the only major caravan producer to use steel, as they had there own steel fabrication shop , what type of brakes and axle is fitted,?
on the hitchlock with CCC cast in it this very unusal as this item was normaly bought in ,even by the big companys like Eccles, etc
i don`t think i have ever seen a caravan manufacturs name on a hitch lock would like to see a pic when you get chance
good luck with resto OVM |

here you go ovm.......
i think i've read some where that the Gardeners made every thing in house havung only wheels and legs made for them?????
the axle is a straight square bar and the brakes are of simple drum and shoe affair.... |

Hi, YVM thanks for the pics, yep its there alright well i never..... this could mean that this van was made in a production run , you would not think that CCC would go to all the trouble of getting the name cast in for three vans ? interesting ......OVM |
