thought i'd post some picture of my winter project thats been waiting all summer for me to start,
it a Cheltenham box caravan from the early 1920's she is nearly 17' long with fix end bedroom, 21 leaded windows 10 lantern windows and rear entrance door,
she's running on 20' disc type wheels and a full steel chanel chassis with overrun brakes and screw down corner steadies,
as you can see extensive restoration is required so should keep me beavering away in the barn for some time.
if any one has any info on early cheltenhams please get in touch
cheers. |

Its really is good to know these wonderful old caravans (social history pieces)
are being saved, good luck with your project and I very much look forward to seeing progress pictures. Hope one day to see it 'in the wood' so to speak. |

Can I ask you about the leaded windows on your van, are they traditional leaded? like a strip of leading outside and a strip inside with the glass held in with the leaded channel? I ask because on my Eccles the leaded windows are a leaded strip within two panes of glass, this to me is incorrect maybe? |

But I am intrigued by the leaded windows on caravans, would the traditional lead strips not have cracked and glass fall out, I am mystified. |

the exterior skin looks like its made of plywood, is this original , I thought all these old girls had masonite walls. _________________ I can resist anything except temptation ! ( Oscar Wilde)

I'm going to have to do more digging, but it looks as though I will having to have some leaded windows made up at some point |

yeah dalek63, the walls are plywood at the moment, i think originally it would of had plywood with a outer aluminium skin laminated together i dont think they used masonite untill the early 30's i know hutchins voyageurs had galvanised steel sides laminated to plywood interiors. |
