If its music in cars, then I rarely listen to anything, although this year it will be 'The Flowmasters!'
At home, it depends on my mood. Anything and everything from Big Joe Turner/Ruth Brown/George Formby via Stax/Motown /Northern Soul/Rock to Moco! The list seems endless!

I quite like country music, I like to listen to the lyrics as they are quite entertaining - songs like:
“Tequila makes her clothes fall off” - from Joe Nicholls
"She went out for cigarettes, and just kept driving on" - from Chelly Wright
“Meat and potato man” - from Brice Long
“Beer or gasoline” from - Chris Young (small extract below)
“… It's a gallon of gas, or a cold six pack
One goes in my tank, one comes in a sack
Makes life complicated when it costs the same
Hell it ain't no fun, to do without one
But I'll do a lot of walkin' if my motor don't run
It's a tough ol' choice to make if you know what I mean
It's either beer of gasoline…”
“Drive” from Alan Jackson (in fact I like most of his stuff…) (extract below)
Just an old half ton shortbed ford
My uncle bought new in '64
Daddy got it right 'cause the engine was smoking
A couple of burnt valves and he had it going
He let me drive her when we'd haul off a load
Down a dirt strip where we'd dump trash off of Thigpen Road
I'd sit up in the seat and stretch my feet out to the pedals
Smiling like a hero that just received his medal
It was just an old hand-me-down Ford
With a three-speed on the column and a dent in the door
A young boy two hands on the wheel
I can’t replace the way it mode me feel
And I would press that clutch
And I would keep it right
And he'd say, "a little slower son you're doing just fine"
Just a dirt rood with trash on each side
But I was Mario Andretti
When daddy let me drive
It was just an old worn out Jeep
Rusty old floorboard, hot on my feet
A young girl two hands on the wheel
I can't replace the way it made me feel
And he'd say, "turn it left and steer it right
Straighten up girl, you're doing just fine
Just a little valley by the river where we'd ride
But I was high on a mountain
When daddy let me drive
hehe sad innit?
Must dash now, left something in the stove!!!

Erin, what about:
Tractors: Badly Bent, as well as most others,
Travis Tritt: Ten Feet Tall,
Junior Brown: Semi Crazy,
Confederate Railroad: Cowboy Cadillac, The big one (funniest record I've heard for a long time)
Alan Jackson: Mercury Blues
Yeah, sad aren't I?

Uncle Joe,
I can’t say I’ve heard those, will look it up sometime when I have a spare moment. They sound promising though!
I keep thinking of another one goes something like “too much blood in my alcohol level” but I can’t think who the artist/band is….

Erin: That song has been recorded by several Artists/Bands but I suspect that the one you are looking for is the version by David Ball, on his Freewheeler album.
How about Alison Krauss?

UJ,
Yes, I think that's him!
I love Alison Krauss and Union Station, they did a fantastic performance at last years CMA awards! Or was it the year before that? Not sure now….

Saw Alison about 12 years ago. Amongst other things, she did her version of 'I Will' better known by the Beatles. Unforgettable!! Then, the following weekend saw The Mavericks..... ended the whole thing a few days later watching Junior Brown.
Some of the americans are going to come into this now...have we hijacked this thread?

Hardly UJ, It's titled Music.
s for country I love AK &US to. Never seen them live but will one day. Some input on the yanks from me is Rod Picott. Now he is bloody special. Also look out for Slaid Cleaves, Gurf Morlix, Lucinda Williams ( with Doug pettibone on guitar) and Fred Eaglesmith.

Thanks for the tips! I'll look out for those the next time I'm in the UK (or US of course). Always good to hear something new! None of those are available here, according to the CD supplier I normally use.
I did have one thought though about music & cars. The connection. A lot of people can connect say the Beach Boys and Ford Thunderbirds, but are there any others that spring to mind?

Just to carry on this topic by asking a question. Has anyone heard of a UK country act called Pete Naden?
I heard his name for the first time today, and wondered if anyone knows anything about him, style and so on...

Sorry UJ, never heard of him (yet), but it does seem that certain music goes with particular cars. Country and western and American cars always seem a natural fit, especially if the era of the music matches the era of the car. Much better than the rock and roll and Elvis look-a-likes that infest some classic car shows
Others I can think of where I would be unhappy driving the car with anything else playing would be the Mini and the Beatles, Citroen DS and the coolest of jazz, Mercedes and Wagner. The music from the Marriage of Figaro suits the new Alfa Spider in the advert so well, that I'm going to get one as soon as I can afford it - the CD not the Spider of course.
Final thought; if you have a Rolls Royce I suppose you will inevitably end up playing the national anthem as you waft along |

A man after my own heart....
I use an I pod for all my music, currently got about 7500 + tracks on it and a lot of podcasts.
http://www.djsteveboy.com/newsletter.html
DJ Steveboy is a good mixer and this newsletter will get you into his site at least I hope it does. If not go to itunes and search for podrunner and you can download all of the music there. I think there is about 55 now and a new one each week.
HTH with the spinning.

Great site, I could visualise the jumps and climbs as I listened! (just downloaded Glidepath)
I’ll tell our spinning instructors about it, a couple of them put their own stuff together, with varying degrees of success and dodgy gaps between tracks! nowhere near as good as this.
I find if the music is good, I concentrate on the music and it numbs the pain!

www.acoustica.com is a site I use also. It has programmes on there that help you do your own stuff. I have bought a couple of their programmes but they only last a year licence so if you reformat and re download they are the old versions.
The one i like best is a recording programme called audiomixer which can record your tracks and also music from other sources...shhhh.
Others are DJ twist and burn and mixcraft both from acoustica. |
