I wonder how many folk remember that Isuzu in Japan once built Hillmans, under licence to Rootes UK? Some links....

Nissan also built Austins under licence in the early 1950's, mostly Somersets. They actually sold quite well in Japan Smile

Hi Vic,

Some interesting variations there.

Firstly they don't appear to have included the Husky in the range. Maybe they just weren't supplied with the complete set of press tools.

Another difference is their Series IIIB Minx. In the UK the Series III with its rolled over tailfins also brought in the deeper windscreen but the Isuzu retains the Series II windscreen. It also retains the column change and has a glovebox not used in the UK.

They are using a different carburettor but curiously they have also changed the shape of the rocker cover and its retention method. Very strange!

Peter

I believe that Nissan also built Austin 7s under licence in the 1930's

Well spotted Peter. Isuzu didn't build the Husky, but they did sell the Mark Estate and a Series (Audax) estate (the Hillman Express) that was very different to the UK estates (only 2 doors, side opening tailgate and different roofline). When they started in 1953 they were only assembling Hillmans from CKD parts but by late 1957 they were making everything locally - hence the different carb and rocker cover. I believe they never went to the larger windscreen to avoid re-tooling as they knew they would be introducing their own models within a few years . They continued to sell the Minx until mid 1964, but it was the 3B body style and it only had the 1494 cc engine.
If you are a Hillman fan I have written an article on the cars that may be of interest to you. Contact me at vichughes165@gmail.com if you would like a copy.

Cheers, Vic

Hi Peter,

The article is 12 pages long including pictures, so it would be a long post.

I might think about putting it up on a webpage somehow.

Cheers, Vic
