It seems to me that,in the light of the speed at which technology appears to develop, there must be an array of tools, gadgets and personal skills which have been consigned to history or languishing in remote workshops awaiting the appearance of some" expert"on a T.V. show to hold forth, for the benefit of his audience on his view on the possible use for such antediluvian artefacts!
I recall chaps in charge of small areas in a factory where they supervised a number of staff, often women,at machines and, without any need for such things ,invariably had a slide rule projecting from the breast pocket of their white coats.
In my own case Iencountered a T square and a set square for the first time and it was assumed that I knew what to do with either,or both, and was regaled with phrases containing words such as "isometric"and "axonometric projections"and was expected to do something worthwhile with such motivation!

You just need to go on to ebay and look at the vintage tools for sale and you will see plenty ancient artefacts......some of which were standard issue in the Post Office workshops in the early 60s.
Box spanners ...unheard of nowadays. Now its big fancy toolboxes some costing 10 grand ...but no box spanners....................changed days eh.

It's not really surprising that box spanners died a death. You couldn't apply any torque to them without them reverting to being round tubes. Wink

Actually you couldn't apply any torque to them anyway because the skinny Tommy bar would just wrap itself around the spanner.

I can remember when serving queen and country a lot about obsolescence.
They usually got rid of the problem by promoting them
