I thought you would all be interested in the following photo :

This photo is of a Mann steam road locomotive delivering coal in a North Wales village callled Penmachno, near Betws y Coed.
Manns were built in Leeds, I was informed and this one which bears a "U" registration letter was registered there presumably by it's manufacturer.
This particular type with it's gears, motion and water tank mounted in a frame at the rear is now extinct in the UK.[/img]

Leaving aside water, I wonder how far it could travel if fueled by the coal load seen in the photo.

Searching the web it looks like you might get 6 miles/cwt. I would guess that there isn't more than 2 tons of coal on the back so you might be able to travel 240 miles. Mind you, at 10 gallons/mile you'd also need to pick-up about 2400 gallons of water en route.

Hi

I have been told that the load is most likley wool as there was a large Wool Mill in Penmachno.

We do a fair milage on the Fodens with a few sacks of coal, and if we fill the tank on the 7 tonner it lasts us a weekend, but that isn't roading all the time, and the tank on the 7 tonner is large, to say the least!

Cheers

Dave
