Apparently, their low tare weight was pretty much the only thing going for it.Hence production remained fairly low. |

There was 3 of these in a field on the A660 just past the A658 Pool Bank cross roads near Bramhope, Leeds, in the 1980's. I always felt sorry for them, but I had a big (compared to my income) mortgage and 2 small kids, so I dare not make enquiries! |

Pretty certain that one turns up occasionally at shows that I attend in West/South Yorks so maybe on of BigJohn's spots survived into preservation!

They suffered from chassis corrosion where the fibre parts of the spring hanger's reacted with the alloy chassis frame. They were very light, under 3 tons, which of course enabled them to operate at 30 MPH instead of the 20 MPH limit imposed on lorries of 3 tons unladen and over. Another "quirk" was that the engine/gearbox assembly was mounted on roller's and the whole unit could be rolled out of the chassis for replacement. LEBUS FURNITURE had lot's of them when I were but a lad!

There's a preserved one that regularly appears at local shows. I don't appear able to get into my fotopic account to show it, but here is a shot of it taken appropriately enough at the Sandwell Historic Vehicle Show in West Bromwich, only just down the road from where it was built :

Just after the war they also built the Jen-Tug, a similar idea to the Scammell Scarab, but four wheeled and with a cab similar to an electric milk float. Dinky Toys made a model of it. In the 50s they built the German Tempo light truck under licence, with a hydraulic lowering load platform.
