What do the mysterious knobs on either side of the radio do?

What a lovely Car!..... she now looks Great as well.....wont be able to do that to a modern in 28 years time, what with all the plastics that warp, crack and discolour, foam trim that disintegrates, electronics & sensors that will give up.....
good to see the car back where it should be, on the road !
Great stuff |

It is amazing what you can find out by chance.
Last week I went to our only remaining garage that sells paraffin,it has been in the same family for three generations and totally unchanged.
Whilst filling up my containers the owner commented that he could have put me in touch with a gentleman who thought about selling his fathers car that had stood in a garage for 28 years, but had lost my phone number and could not make contact.
It turned out to be the very same Hillman Minx I had purchased.
He then went on to explain how they had maintained the car thoughout its time on the road.
The owner had been a meticulous sort of person and always asked them to do jobs on the car far beyond the normal service requirements, the car would arrive at their garage gleaming from head to toe.
I mentioned that the mechanicals had been well preserved, and it was obviously down to the garage and their care to detail that everything had been greased and adjusted correctly, making the re-commissioning work that much easier.
He then informed me the previous gentleman had a vacumn clutch fitted operated by a lever on the dashboard, they changed the position of the handbrake and fitted the knob on to the steering wheel.
I told him the knob and handbrake were still the same but the vacumn clutch lever had been disconnected, (I will have to investigate this more).
I asked if he could delve into the archives and find any information they had about the car,old service records etc.
He has asked me to take the car down to the garage and show him how it looks now it is back on the road.
I will take some photo`s and post them on here.
The two knobs either side of the radio operate the front spotlights,as you turn the knobs the spotlights get dimmer or brighter.
