Hi all, the following query arrived via email - can anyone help or advise? Surely glass windows aren't illegal?
------------------------
Thomson glenelg windows.
I have not used my 1969 caravan for a number of years but am thinking of restoring it and using it again.
I believe the glass windows are now illegal and need to be replaced. I am trying to find a supplier of seals and suitable replacement windows. I suppose I could just cut some from acrylic but I should still need seals.
Have you any advice and locations where I might find spares?
Thank You Max _________________ Rick - Admin

To quote Alec on the other thread - More Bollox.
If they are illegal, every classic caravan would be put off the road. _________________ Brian

if you do want to replace them ring the RAC window section ask for the plant side as they replace the windows in tractors etc and also do caravans, we have had ours replaced on our 67 cheltenham they replaced the rubbers and glass |

All vintage caravans are legal with glass windows. The date glass windows are not legal is from around the early 1980's. All caravans from then on had to have plastic ones. But rest assured this does NOT affect our old caravans. The same thing with break away devices, a caravan made before 1968 ish doesn't need to have a break away wire or chain to operate the brakes if it comes free from the tow trailer. I haven't bothered to look any dates up in my books, but if any ones needs the exact dates please let me know and I will be glad to provide them. _________________ I can resist anything except temptation ! Plastic windows were needed from 1977, I think. |

Legislation didn't come into effect until 1st September 1978 when the law required caravan manufacturers to either use toughened safety glass or plastic windows which we are familiar with today. Some manufacturers used both toughened safety glass on the outside of the windows and plastic inside as a form of double glazing but this was not to last. Firstly the units didn't form a tight seal between the two surfaces causing condensation in between and secondly the weight of plastic windows was far lighter than that of the toughened safety glass.
I've just had a glass pane replaced in my 1972 Royale which was 4mm plate and to repeat what other members have already said my van is still legal on the road as it was manufactured before the legislation come into effect
