We took the cover off our Carlight a month ago, and all was well, but there were one or two ripples on the roof, at the back of the van.
The fibreglass on the roof is very thin, and it is only a matter of time before it will have to be replaced. We had to replace some of the ceiling at the front of the van a couple of years ago, and the roof exterior given some attention.
My husband is more than able to do replace any damaged woodwork on the roof, but has no experience of fibreglassing.
Has anyone on here any experience? The van is a 1966 Caribbean, in good condition generally.
The other option is to have it done professionally, which being keen DIYers, goes against the grain. |

| I think I would get in touch with the owners club and explain the problem. Photos are a good thing as well to assess the amount of work required. |

Not sure what you mean by that? Fibreglass does not go thin. Has it delaminated or been damaged? If you look at the underside when it is bright outside, is the appearance uniform, or does it have lots of spidery cracks?
Fibreglass repairs are not difficult, even when it comes to replacing a section that has been damaged. I don't expect you are local to me in Gloucester, or I would be happy to inspect / advise / help. I have done fibreglass for many years and so have plenty of experience.
One little tip I can give anyone....
Stay away from the Halford's type of fibreglass repair kits. The hardener is far too fast to do a good job on anything but a tiny area. Using pro quality materials helps greatly in getting a good result. |

| Thanks for the info. The roof of an old carlight is 2mm ply with a skin of fibreglass sheet bonded to it, in my case water has entered throgh the roof light causing the ply to delaminate thereby rippling the outer skin. I can easily replace the section, it's getting a watertight seal where the new meets the old. |
