I have used Hylomar which originated from R/R it never sets biggest problem is the gsk or the item the gsk is going onto must i repeat must be oil free as this stuff will not stick to even slightly oily surfaces, to my way of thinking is that if grease is used [my dad always used it] then the gsk soaks up the grease and allows oil to seep through.

Machined casing to pressed tin use Hylomar. Machined to machined either grease or Stag. Other seals can be effected using silicone, finger tighten then fully tighten next day. Works for me most of the time.

Hylomar was known as SQ32 at RR, and came in three grades, light, medium and heavy. You chose the grade from experience, or sometimes the drawings stated which to use. I think medium is roughly what you can buy at spares shops.
The Stag I used to use in the 60's was a red liquid, which came in a tin and was brush applied. A BMC transverse unit, looked quite good, when built with it, the red joint lines contrasting with the green engine paint.
Don't know if Stag bought up Wellseal or invented it, but it is very good. We use Wellseal to build light aircraft engines now. The parting faces of a Lycoming crankcase have no gasket, just a smear of Wellseal and a couple of lengths of silk thread running round inside the bolt hole line.
Grease is used on the rocker boxes.

Vauxhall/Bedford and David Brown (among others) recommended Wellseal for coating either side of cylinder head gaskets. I tend to use Hylomar, it seals well yet can be easily dismantled should the need arise.

Pete.

Hylomar as a coating for pre-formed gaskets.

I can recommend Wellseal. Was introduced to it by the technicians at Norton Motor Cycles when I was racing with one of their rotary engines in the nineties. It was used in lieu of gaskets for metal-to-metal seals in their engines and I've used it many times since when engine building.

Not on head gaskets, sorry I didn't make myself clear! Embarassed I use Hylomar on most other joints though, and we used to use it on BMC diesel cylinder liners.

Pete.
