i've an opportunity to buy a 1957 Squire that looks promising, though the seller has advised that he does not have the oil sump for the engine, and the engine is in pieces. he does say that he has parts for several engines that he will include in the sale. from the pictures i've seen, it appears that he does not have the front seats, although i may be wrong.
is it difficult to obtain a replacement sump and seats for one of these, albeit i'm on the wrong side of the pond to start with?
i imagine that Ford sold lots of these up Canada way, at least i hope so.
also; the sidevalve Ford engine is hopefully easy to rebuild?

I think the 100E sv engine is a little easier to rebuild than the earlier E93A unit - despite identical capacities there are a lot of differences, so worth checking that you're buying the right bits if you see some advertised Smile

excellent, excellent. i will ask the seller a few more questions to try and establish proper identification of what he has. i missed out on a standout '59 Prefect some 25 years ago, and regret it badly. it was mising only a proper windscreen to be roadworthy and some time later i found a perfectly good 'screen at no cost. grrrr.

the seller e-mailed me a great set of pics, unfortunately i can't forward them directly on. the front seats are there, luckily; there seems to be double everything for the engine except a spare block and the errant sump.
there is what i consider normal rust in the floor; it doesn't extend into the rails. there are bodywork issues to contend with, requiring some patient panel beating as i'm almost certain body spares are non-existent for Squires... i was amused to find that Ford still felt it cost efficient to use actual wood in the rear load structure....
the first order of business would be to determine the condition of those engine parts. a healthy coat of rust seems to coat all of them......
the little bugger almost seems to be begging me to rescue it.

from what i gather, the squire is a relative rarity among 100e's.... i may be forced to "do the right thing" and adopt it. if only to spare it being transmuted into a drag car, a fate that befalls far too many restorable classics.

close examination of the pics i was sent show a very solid frame structure with holed floors, but complete interior trim and only average scarring and wear-n-tear from years of use on the bodywork. the all-important front turret structure looks nearly rust free.

it might supplant my ten-year and running falcon project.

They're rare enough over here, let alone overseas! Definitely worth considering especially if the unique-to-Squire/Escort parts are present and correct, anything else can be found.

you're shaming me into acting, i see it now! i'm a fool for old Fords anyway. i can't figure out why the seller has two sets of engine parts but lost BOTH sumps..... there's only the one block, and i think three cylinder heads; i hope the blocks are near indestructible. i'm working out a way to retrieve it from 500+ miles away without spending more than the purchase price!

seller informs me that he may have a buyer already; i'll know Sunday i hope.... trying to work out a plan to go 500 miles one way, rent a lorry and trailer, and not eat macaroni and cheese boxes until Christmas....
it hurts that i found this car on a hot rod site.... and the potential buyers there would hack it about mercilessly to make a dragster from it.
hopefully i can make this work out well.
