Along with road tax renewal notification for one of my "Historic" motorbikes received today was an insert entitled "askMID". Supposedly outlining the new Law about insurance of off the road vehicles. Instead of which, parts seem contradictory.

I have two "Historic" cars which have been "off the road" since before SORN was introduced and are not currently on SORN. Neither have, or could pass the MOT in their current state but are economically restorable, but not driveable. They both have V5c documents and are therefore still on the DVLA Database. I THINK they will now have to be SORNed if only to protect the registration numbers.

If I do SORN them, do I now have to insure them? An expense I can ill afford at the moment.
My son has a modern motorbike currently on SORN, being out of work, is he going to be faced with insurance costs? If so he will be faced with being forced to sell the bike, which is only off the road because of his circumstances.

Can anyone "un-confuse" me please?

Jim.

Look here for more confusion!
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/UntaxedVehicle/DG_069727

I have two V5 untaxed, un-SORNed, un-MOTed, un-insured cars, both of which do not need SORN as they were last taxed before 31st Jan 1998.
Nor do they require insurance as...although they are not SORNed...they fall in the "taxed before the magic 31st Jan 1998".....maybe!!
I spoke to my local DVLA office (a human) and they confirmed that I did not need to SORN either vehicle....and my registration numbers were safe...
I occassionally go by their office and check up again....

So are you confused...?

Oh yes they are also UN-restored!!
Good luck,
Alistair

I'm fairly sure if the vehicle is still on the old style V5 document and has been off the road and not taxed since Jan 1998, then you do not need to either SORN or insure the vehicle. The MID is the Motor Insurance Database, and is a sharing database for insurers, the police and the DVLA. But this has only been in force a few years, and I'm confident they have not uploaded old data from prior to the 1998 cut off, so you should be fine. But obviously best to check with the DVLA.

Maybe I am OK then. My Registration Certificates are actually V5c, but they were issued in 1985 when I changed addresses.
I am still wondering about my son's motorbike though, which is about 4 years old.

Going by the web page I quoted, your son's bike is OK under SORN. Does not need to be insured...unless you want to in case of damage/theft etc...

Quote:
When SORN is needed

•if the vehicle has no valid insurance in place

You must declare SORN if your vehicle is:

•not taxed and off the road
•not insured and off the road
•taxed and uninsured - you must insure your vehicle or make a refund application with a SORN declaration to DVLA

Unquote.

Thanks Traction
You have made more sense, or explained better, than the website. Or is it my three score years and ten(+) slowing my perception down? Confused
Jim.
