Hallo Folks,

I'm wondering if the door from an Austin Dorset is the same size like the Devon?

Kind regards,
Jonathan

No, a Dorset door is much wider. I don't think the Dorset door ever had the quarter light either.

As Keith says, the Dorset - being a two-door car - had much wider doors than the Devon.

Thanks!

I'm wondering...
... there's an austin devon for sale not very far from here, for not much money, but the roof is not very good..
So I was thinking wy not converting to an convertible?
But I have to make it two doors, thinking of keeping the windows or cut it like the converted Dorset convertibles....
What do you guys think?

kind regards,
Jonathan

Jonathan,

In Australia in 1950, Austin sold a tourer that was based on a stock standard A40 running gear and chassis. The only body parts that were different (locally made) were the doors, the tub and of course, the hood and bows and sidescreens. The bonnet, boot, mudguards, windscreen and all body jewelry were standard A40.

However, the doors are definitely a lot wider than a standard Devon and if you were going to chop the roof off, you would have to move the bodywork behind the door and also modify the doors to make them wider to enable entry to the rear seats. Also the front seat backs would need to be hinged. I think it would be quite an involved job! I have no idea if a modification like this would be legal in the UK!

If you care to look at my first post on this forum, you'll see my Australian built A40 Tourer!
