It is now ten years since the change over to the current style of registration numbers, eg LX 51 ABC, and over the past few weeks I have driven extensively over the North West and it has occurred to me that one sees very few old style prefix registration vehicles eg X123 ABC on the road.
Those that remain are mostly V - Y prefixes and I wondered recently which vehicles of twenty years ago can be regarded as classic. Certainly, I rarely see anything with a G - K prefix.

I am willing to be corrected but it seems to me that most of the 20 year old survivors are either Volkswagen Golfs, Land Rover Discoverys, Mitsubishi Shogun/ Pajero or similar.

Which cars from the early 1990s would you consider to be present or future classics?

I submit, for a start, the following :

Ford Sierra RS Cosworth
Ford Escort RS Cosworth
Ford Escort RS2000
Ford Orion 1600E
Vauxhall Calibra
Rover 216 Gti
Rover 220 turbo
Rover Sterling
Mini
Vauxhall Nova GTE
Vauxhall Cavalier Turbo
Vauxhall Astra GTE (especially the 16 valve)
Peugeot 205 GTi
Peugeot 309 GTi

And now over to you all............

Hmmm. Out of your list I'd agree with the sporty Fords (Orion excluded), the Mini, Mk1 Astra GTE and Nova GTE at a push, and the 205 GTi, although sooner or later, by age alone, virtually all cars end up under the "classic" umbrella.

I'm struggling to think of 1990s cars, but I'd add:

Saab 900 turbo (pre-GM)
BMW M5/M535i (E28 shape)
Citroen Visa GTi (or was that 80s?)
Cavalier convertible
MG RV8
MG Metro
ERA Mini Turbo
Corrado VR6
Lancia Delta Integrale
Lancia Y10 (just for being a bit different!)
Mazda MX5 Mk1
Jaguar XJRS & XJR (XJ40 and X300 shape)
Jaguar XJS especially the convertible

plus Van versions of the Austin Maestro, Metro, Nova, Pug 205 and the rest on rarity alone

I'd probably add, Peugeot 405 Mi16, Cavalier Gsi (incl 4x4), and I agree with the Nova GTE, although that would be late 80's, it became a Gsi model by early 90's. The last of the Mk2 Astra GTE's maybe also. Also, late model Mitsubishi Starion's went onto G plates so would qualify in my book.
There are lots from the 80's though, so I won't start on those.
I still think most of the early 90's stuff does not qualify as classic status just yet, but loads from the 80's do now I'd say.

Isn't everything after 1972 fair game?

Don't forget the Mondeo!

Great driver's car.

How could I have forgotten about this one?

One of the local doctors (GP) has recently bought an ex Japanese home market one which had been re(?) imported.
It looks like brand new with a tiny mileage - 40k kilometres - with the bulky air con taking up most of the passenger footwell.

There is one other vehicle which I omitted from my list - a Mark 1 Volkswagen Caddy pick up. I bought one new in August 1989 and it served me for ten years and 157,000 miles. It was a superb vehicle and good original ones are sought after these days.
There was one special variant which was offered in 1992 (I think) - the Caddy Sport with a 1600cc Golf GTi engine. There was only one colour - white - with everything Mark 1 GTi, seats, alloys etc.
That surely must qualify as an early 1990s classic and I regret not having bought one.

Reading a few forums (fora?) one gets the impression that the main problem is spares these days. I can't think off of the top of my head any cars I'd like to add, but I can't say the the Lancia White Hen - as it was known - I'd save. Ugly little blighter! No Alfas nor Japanese (MX5 excepted) in the list though I note. As I warm to the subject the Supra or earlier MR2 for example? Whatever happened to the Nissan Arna? Mr. Green

I did think of that abomination funnily enough - wasn't it the Alfa Romeo Arna, and the Nissan Cherry Europe, or did I imagine that? I need to sit down in a darkened room now after thinking of such appalling things Smile

Sorry am I missing something....but didn`t the world end after 1972. Shocked

With the dimise of the Carry On films,Ealing comedies,Morris Minor,Politicaly incorrect tv programmes, Western films,Mods and Rockers,Caravan holidays on the east coast,Playing in the street, etc.

As I get older I appreciate pre-war cars more than even the 1950`s /1960`s vehicles,of which I have adored for the past 30+ years.
I like things made by human craftsmen....not Robots. Very Happy

I notice most of the choices for recent classics, are in the hot end of the ranges. Cosworth this, GTi that etc. Many of these cars get abused by the later owners and end up written off. We are more likely to see more middle of the road types, one genuine old lady owner etc. These are likely to survive, and be easily restorable. How about a nice 1600 Sierra? You don't really see many now. No one has mentioned the Skoda special pick-up, with everything yellow, even the steering wheel! Laughing

I agree but even these will be thin on the ground soon. My aunt gave up driving recently and sold the 1992 Ford Fiesta 1.1 she had bought new. It had only "done" 12,000 miles, was pristine and a young man paid her £750 asking price without quibbling.
A couple of months later I saw in it's new guise : oversized alloy wheels, darkened windows, big bore exhaust and thumping bass speakers where the once as new back shelf used to be............

In similar vein I wonder if there be ANY Citroen Saxos or Peugeot 106s left in a few years time.

Good point, but no different from when I was younger. Then all my mates had Mk2 Escort's and tried to make them look like the rally versions! They were all naff. Glad I kept my then Viva HC GLS all original.

Sad to say my daily driver is an R reg. Vauxhall Vectra that I have owned for almost ten years.

Too lazy to look for a newer car.

I wish I still had my 205 GTI, traded it in for next to nothing, never mind.

We can all cry in our beer like that. When I think I sold my Gold Star for £40, virtually gave away my T100 Trophy, sold a BMW M1 for not a lot - if I go on I'll end up playing russian roulette, the gun will go off and I'll still miss! I still have a Greeves Trials in the UK though Very Happy
