Hi, any one with any info on the Airedale car, made in 1919, fitted with a Dorman KNO 11.9hp, 1795cc petrol engine. There is supposed to be one in running condition in Scotland, cheers,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible

An exceptionally rare car - if memory serves me correctly I've been to see one in a state of restoration here in Scotland. However the owner who invited me to see it has sworn me to secrecy as to its location.
Is there something specific you'd like to know - that is if I'm not dreaming it was an Airedale? LOL! |

Hi Scotty, yes, could be classed as rare as only 100 built. The interest was with regard to the ' one in running condition in Scotland ' which is supposed to be a 1923 12hp. I got the enquiry, with my SVVF hat on, from someone who is actually researching the 9hp Riley engine of 25/26 which is reputed to have strong resemblance to the Dorman KNO engine used by Airdale. He was looking to try & arrange to take photographs for comparison. Cheers,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible

Hi John,
It is an Airedale I was thinking about, so I'll contact the owner of the one under restoration and see what he says. It may be he'll just send pictures of the engine to me to then forward on to you.
My apologies for my obtuse manner, but he's very careful about his vehicles and doesn't want too many people to know where they are, which I'm sure you'll realise is quite understandable.
You're more than welcome to drop me a PM of what exactly your contact is looking for and I'll do my best, or, alternatively you're both welcome to visit the Riverside Museum and we can chat about it over a coffee & bun one day. |

Hi Scotty, thanks for that - may be a bit difficult for him to visit you as I believe he's in Oz. I will chuck some coal under the email machine & try & get some specifics although it seems to be the engine which is of interest - I think he is trying to make a connection between the Dorman & the Riley 9hp. I'll get back to you, cheers,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible

Hi John,
I've had a reply from the owner of the Airedale and he tells me his car is fitted with a 4KNO Dorman engine.
By sheer good fortune he has just finished having the car completely rebuilt and will take some pictures of its engine for me to forward on to you over the next few weeks.

The Varley Woods another typical assembled car of the early twenties also used the Dorman KNO engine. The I believe only surviving example of that car was near Shrewsbury last time I saw it. Both it and the Airedale are fairly typical of the period but of no particular merit or outstanding design hence few survivors. In spite of that I'd love one of either of these lost causes. _________________ Jonathan Butler
