I'm a little surprised that you want a 'mild steel' spec stud, it's not really a strutural grade material for fasteners. However, why don't you just run a die down a length of bar stock and cut to length? Or buy some threaded bar maybe

Julian.

Even B and Q (our local branch is called Stand and Queue) sell studding.

Aye, it's all metric though. Presuming it's the same stuff as the one near us sells anyway!

But you could weld a bit of 5/16'' set-screw thread on each end. I feel pretty sure that if the original spec is for mild steel you could get away with it!

I think your earlier idea of running a die down a bit of bar stock would be simpler. It's certainly what I'd do.

I know, I agree with you/me Smile

I did once weld threaded bits onto bar-stock, it was to make a DIY style puller for some boiler tubes that needed replacing and so needed to be longer than the tubes. I just 'glued' it all up with my trusty stick welder, not really caring about quality as a failure would be nothing more than a slight nuisance, and of course the thing lasted for all 31 tubes while I wound the nuts up so tight my arm was bending!

What threads(s) are you looking for - what length of thread?

I have a 5" one with 5/16" UNC both ends which I could cut & thread to your sizes or I can supply a piece of 5/16" UNF theaded rod. This would be free, cheers,JD.
