|
|
Hello,
A family friend has notified me of the sale of a 1930`s caravan.
It is similar to an Eccles,Jubilee or Car Cruiser etc. I have not seen it myself.
The interior is all original and in good order, the exterior needs a new roof covering, paintwork, brakes and tow hitch attention.
I have been asked to make an offer.
I need to weigh up the purchase price, cost of finishing the project and the value of the finished article.
I know at rallies prices are offered or bantered about but what do 1930`s caravans in very condition fetch nowdays.
Owners always think they are sitting on a pile of gold, but it is us enthusiasts that restore these projects because we love them, and do not really count our time or money.
Any thoughts please.
Regards

Hmm how long is a piece of string? Untill you see the caravan , decide what needs doing and how much that will cost, I dont think anyone can tell you. Might be worth a couple of hundred or a couple of thousand. _________________ I can resist anything except temptation ! ( Oscar Wilde)

Sorry I did not make myself clear. I do not want to know the value of projects or unfinished caravans, that would be far too difficult to find out.
What I would like to know is at what price are 1930`s/1940`s caravans changing hands for when in very good condition ,fully restored etc.
i.e a 1936 Eccles for example or a 1940`s Car Cruiser.
People have often asked me what I would sell my caravan for,I have to tell them I absolutley have no idea.
For instance what would you get for £4,000.00
Kind Regards

There is the Period and Classic Caravan Club - for website click here - who may have some idea for you.
However, I think it will be a little like classic cars, or even kit cars, they are worth what someone wants to pay for it at the time you wish to sell! There will be a 'market', but probably very limited, so you may have to wait to find a buyer, and then agree a suitable price. |

Sorry we are getting away from the point....
What I asked was what are 1930`s caravans fetching on the open market.
I know classic cars have different values based on their condition but if we look at say a Austin A35 in good condition we know the book value is £3,000-£3250.00.
I know you can get cheaper ones but they will be crap.
So my point is could I buy a fully restored Eccles 1936 caravan in very good order for £4,000.Or will I need to pay £5,000
Someone must have sold a vintage caravan in the last 6 months,or do they never come on the market.

I don't think you will get a meaningful answer GF.
Sales happen so infrequently, and the factors in the transaction (age, condition, prestige make, friend-to-friend or stranger-to-stranger, etc etc) so variable that anything is possible.
They are still being given way in some cases, or sold at auction for a fortune. |

They do indeed sell for a fortune in auctions. We went to an auction in Oxford last Saturday, which included a 1926 Bertram Hutchings Voyageur. The auction guide suggested a sale price of between £3,000 and £6,000. Including the buyer's premium, it sold for £11,500 - and not to us, I hasten to add!

What a great looking caravan that is, was the interior original and fully fitted?
I paid 8,900 pounds for my 1929/30 Eccles deluxe which is fully restored and fully original interior. Purchased about two years ago from a classic car dealer knowing that I was paying top price. But as has been said, these things are bought with the heart not the head. Do I have any regrets? none whatsoever. |
