Hello all, i got my mk2 when looking for a project car when i was 16, it was sat in a garage for 6 years and left to rust.
so the plan was to keep everything as original as possible and do all the work myself, learning as i went along.
so 4 years on, ive been driving the golf for a couple of years now and it hasnt stepped a foot wrong. along with no advisories in its las MOT
so step back 4 years...
next up was some bodywork.
the tailgate was badly corroded (recently replaced)
there was rust on the rear valance and a patch to the left of the vw badge.
i decided to tackle this with some mix up cans from halfords. they did the job quite well
the final spraying results are shown later in the show pics
so the car was coming along nicely, and i was eager to get driving. after i passed my test i decided to wait for a while to drive my baby and use my mums 1.0 swift (awsome little car!) after 6 months to gain some experiance and a lot of saving i was out in the golf, the best day of my life!
about a year back i was asked to display my car at Hayseldens VW in Barnsley for the launch of the new Polo and to celebrate 50 years of trading.
then winter arrived
after 2 years the filler sank in my tailgate and it was looking a bit ratty so i managed to pick up a totally mint tailgate for £50
before machine polish
after
next up, arches off and welding/curing corrosion
new G60 leather wheel
Shows
before thoresby classic car show
The show i help organise, Elsecar Mega meet
engine bay..
before
after.. many hours spent stripping down and rebuilding, again all myself learning as i went along, i rebuilt all the head with new tappets, head gasket, valve stem seams, new exhaust valves and a good clean!
during..
getting there
before rebuild
after
old bits
recently began respraying the rear due to a small amount of corrosion
after
all done with spray can from halfords.
decided to tackle the wheels too
before
during
after
i decided on a 195/45/15 which has a slightly smaller side wall over standard which will do nicely with the drop.
new drilled and cross grooved
rolling shots
a few random shots
on show
had my bonnet sprayed at VW due to some fat unit sitting on it when it was parked up..
after
a new sticker i designed for the back..
i went up to butter tubs with a few friends. even thought some of the cars had over doube and in one case treble the amount of power i had the old girl had no problem keeping up due to the twisties
and lastly a few interior shots
VIDEO! (because we all like them!!)
hes a video from the first time it ever started, turns turn of the key after 6 years of being stood!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLl57fvyBFg&list=UUu_xJN0Xhd1BXTJXDez_k4w&index=8&feature=plcp
and after the rebuild, lovely and smooth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDK5qzR_k6I&list=UUu_xJN0Xhd1BXTJXDez_k4w&index=2&feature=plcp
well sorry for all the pictures! i have put many 100's of hours into this car without a big budget or the help of "mummy and daddy fund" there are loads of bits ive missed off but its too much to cover
anyway i hope you all like what ive done
all comments welcome

Uhh that warms a former VW mechanics heart
Proper GTI,s have the Golf ball gear stick
They are rare birds, overhere = very expensive, becourse of our taxsystem
well done of you to rescue the car, make sure to spray LOADS of waxoil,
into all doors/bonnet/bootlid/sills/etc, so you can keep her "Factory Fresh"

Nice job! But surely the car is not old enough to have been "lost" in a barn!

Congratulations on the best Golf GTI I've seen in a long time, far too many get molested so it's great to see you've kept it standard.
I had nine of them over the years and started CLUB GTI in 1987 with some mates after going to the GTI Treffen in Austria; often wish I had one now. |

thanks chaps its standard apart from the tyre size and coilovers, which i think im going to raise to a fast road set up (similar to the photos from buttertubs because it really is an effort to drive this low, i have to literally crawl over bump and my splitter catches quite alot...plus the fact me wishbones and driveshafts are far from level, so it tends to have slight understeer, where as with the other set up everything was level and it handled like you wouldn't beleive!....looks good though
well story goes the first owner was a doctor from leeds, the previous owner looked for a year around the country until he found this one.
his plan was to restore it but never got round to it due to family and other commitments so it sat there for 6 years.. that where i came in and rescued the old girl before it was scrapped!
^^ ah im a member on cgti but rarely go on now
thanks again ill hopefully see you all at some classic car shows this year! still plenty to do though! |

Excellent work Cope!
I've just changed my car after running a 2009 Golf TDI GT for three years and to be honest it was a fantastic car - quick and economical.
If they had stuck with the R32 that's what I'd be driving now, but the Golf R was just too ordinary, so I went elsewhere.
10 out of 10. |
