I bought a secondhand MIG welder on Ebay last year and it came with a large old BOC bottle that the seller told me was 'nearly full'. It ran out after about 1/2 hour's welding! It's been taking up space ever since so last week I gave it to one of those "rag and bone" men who drive up and down the road looking for scrap metal. He took it off me, no questions asked.

''rag & bone'' men around here = p*key Sad There is no way on earth that you want to give those thieving barstewards the slightest encouragement to get on your property. Rather than give gas bottles to the p*key I would much prefer to saw it up with a junior hacksaw into tiny bits and flush it down to loo!!

I've just got one of those 'Hobby Gas'' bottles for my MIG welder. No annual charge and the gas is about 1/10th the price of Machine Mart disposables.

I think like in every walk of life you get good and bad types. I've never had any problems with the ones around here, I'm very close to Dale Farm as well. If I have any scrap I often leave it out as the alternative is to drive it to the tip, making a mess of my car in the process. They're always polite and I've never heard of any scrap getting nicked in my village.

I use a local fire extinguisher company for my welding gas - if you have one near you it's well worth an enquiry as the refills tend to be half the price of dedicated welding gas suppliers.

Local p*key near me (Helsby) have to answer bail soon for around god knows how many offences, machinery theft, ie farm quads, tools, welders etc totalling about £750,000. Of course they won't answer bail as they all have about three names and just move on. Getting scrap nicked isn't the problem it's getting valuable stuff taken.

I'm afraid this 'good & bad' argument is flawed, your average p*key, as opposed to a true travelling gypsy makes just about every penny they earn via theft and conning people, I work with a couple of ex-coppers that will back me up on this. Those that don't live out in the sticks and/or need expensive tools like farm machinery to make their livings do not understand the scale of the problem....
