Insured my pre 1930's Eccles for the past couple of years feeling reasonably secure in the knowledge that should the worst happen! Having studied all of the policy document now I feel I may as well keep the 227 pounds in my pocket this year. All the exclusions + if van is left for two hours unattended it must be fitted with recognised hitch-lock or wheel clamp or your not insured. Fact is I cannot fit either to my van, although I use my massive 'U' Granite d-lock on the eye of the tow bar. Then the vans not insured when being towed, another exclusion! Phoned my vintage car insurer and they tell me the van is not insured whilst being towed and cannot offer insurance either. And so it goes on, I just feel that insurers see all the risks and exclude them from the insurance offered, am I wrong?

BT, try Nor County insurance, 0845 345 4525. They specialise in older caravan insurance. Although not in your category, I have my unique Royale Rangemaster insured with them, on an agreed value policy. I damaged it three years ago, cost £2500 to repair, and it was done without any hassle.Speak to Jennifer or Lorraine, and tell them I said hello!
To say a caravan is not insured when being towed is ludicrous! Are you just supposed to look at it?

BT, just in case you've read my other post where I said that I was insured with Caravan Rescue, this is the same as Nor County!

Thanks emmerson, I let you know how I get on.

Seems they could find only one insurer prepared to offer cover for pre 1950's caravan. Its my current insurer, therefore I am no further forward. I will question the policy detail about towing with them making sure I have not misunderstood about the clause in the insurance.

Are you any further with this? I found the same with my caravan when I used to be insured. Too many exclusions, so why bother? The last 5 years, I haven't bothered with insurance, but there is bound to come a day when I wished I was insured.

No further forward, had a broker who thought they could find a deal for me, they couldn't other than my current insurer! I was at the Strumpshaw Steam-up at weekend, conversation with specialist broker and he couldn't help either. As soon as a pre 1950 caravan is mentioned insurers run a mile.

Have you tried 'Outlook Home'.....they certainly insure older (travellers)vans. Would need to check that it covers being towed too (seems pointless otherwise!). Not sure if this is of any help but worth a try. http://gypsytrailercaravans.webeden.co.uk/#/outlook-insurance/4555163602

Thank you Trailerman, I've re-insured now and the Company have covered the caravan for when towing. Come next year I will certainly be giving this Company a ring though.
