| WITH THE PASSING YEARS AND WRIST PROBLEMS I AM FINDING THE HEAVY STEERING ON MY VOLVO 144 HARD TO COPE WITH AND WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS EVER PUT A VOLVO 240 STEERING BOX INTO A 140 AS I BELIEVE THE 240 HAS POWER STEERING. I HAVE RATHER VAGUE INFORMATION THAT IT IS POSSIBLE BUT WOULD LIKE TO BE SURE BEFORE I PURCHASE A DONOR 240 |

That would be perfectly possible. I had a friend who did likewise around 1985 or so in a 142.
But it is a lot of work and then you still end up with an old power steering system. Which likely will have leaky hoses and old worn seals in the steering box. Or will leak in a few years time if you do not fit new.
Think about fitting a modern electric power steering. The existing steering box is kept, a special electric motor is placed under the dash fitted to the steering shaft.

Many thanks for the replies. I have asked for a price quote and will post any replies that I get. I have also found on the net that many more are seeking the same thing on a number of classic cars.

When I did it the first time that is what I saw also, with the no translation statement.
I think there is a glitch, possibly in the link, if you click on the union flag, on the top bar, it all suddeny becomes clear.
Edit
When I clicked again after posting originally it came up, correctly, in French and the translation changed it to English OK as well.
and this should be straight into the English.

I got a quote for a system from this guy
daveray@metalmonkeyltd.com
he is the UK agent for the Dutch company ooto.
For my Morris 1800 a self fit kit comes in at £750. It includes the unit, splined sleeves (the steering column has to be cut and a piece removed then the sleeves welded on each end, wiring and ECU. The unit bolts to the bulkhead.
I will probably look for a spare steering column to use so that originality can be restored if required. Can't do anything at the moment though until I am fully recovered from a heart attack. At the moment nurse wont let me lift, never mind wield a spanner |
