[Split from the Reliant thread....RJ]
That reminds me now of something I meant to ask on here... How easy is it to sell a reg no, and get a replacement - NOT on a bona fide classic, but a semi-modern banger which likely won't see many more MOTs, but which we don't want to scrap until it's absolutely necessary? We have been told the number has value, but obviously once the car is an MOT failure that's gone...
Does it cost to get a new number, and is there "down time" that the car can't be used on the road while it's being processed? Might be worth the hassle if it nets enough cash to buy a decent motor that'll actually start on a cold morning |

First step is to put the number on retention. You can download the forms from DVLA. That way you don't have to nominate the recipient vehicle and you will be allocated a new number for the donor.
The donor does need to be MOT'd and taxed although if these have recently expired and the car has been SORNed that's still OK.
Easy process costs £106 AIRC. That lets you keep the plate for a year and covers the cost of allocating it to another car.
You can then simply sell on the retention certificate. |

| That's the way to do it, and there is no downtime - the car continues to be legal on the old number until allocated a replacement, and you then have seven days to equip it with new plates. It is quite likely that DVLA will ask to inspect the car, so better to do it sooner than later, otherwise you've got to sort out suitable trailer transport once the car is SORNd |
