Splined arm or link that attaches to the steering box.

I found a NOS head gasket for the Dodge truck in Massachusetts, and it arrived safely here this week. Cheap to buy, but not to post....

New inner tubes and flaps were sourced for the Dodge tourer a couple of weeks back too, and are now in place.

Being a thirties car the Austin has a basic centrifugal advance distributor with points. It runs well enough in standard fettle, but cold starting, even using the priming lever on the pump, hammers the batteries whilst the car gets going and I wondered whether a simple electronic setup would improve the engine's response overall.
I'd had good reports from ATDC members of the Boyer Bransden setup, and although contactless is the ultimate way forwards, using this system which retains the points, seemed sensible in the context of a seventy year old car, with the added attraction of being able to revert back to the old system by the roadside with a spot of reconnecting if something fries the box of tricks.
Points last almost forever anyway with this system, and the condensor is redundant, so less to worry about in maintenance terms.
An improvement is immediately noticeable. Starting is easier and the car definitely idles and pulls much better. The installation is discreet and the box can be hidden out of sight behind the bulkhead.
Recommended.

Slightly off topic - I have fitted several of these to my cars they are pretty good if you can use a soldering iron and best of all cheap! Original points retained should it fail as well and seem to last for ages. I've used them to convert mags to run as a coil set up as well.

After handing over several notes of the realm, the freshly-skimmed spare head for the truck returned home today.

Thanks for the interesting link, I like the sound of the intermittent wiper kit linked off the same page even more though! I have a pushbutton fitted to give a single wipe, but that gets to be a real drag on drizzly Welsh days that are neither one thing or the other - worth investigating further, methinks Smile
