Can someone settle a friendly dispute. My mate says unleaded fuel was introduced in this country in the 80s. I thought the 90s. Who is right...or are we both wrong. Confused Confused

As far as I remember it was 1988. There was much concern about altering ignition timing on various vehicles as I remember, combined with horrible predictions of valve seat recession on BL engines... Wink Have to say that I never did see any of that come to pass in my trade dealings with it though. Presumably everything I dealt with never went far enough or got hot enough to cause any damage Rolling Eyes

I think that leaded was officially discontinued in 2000, but in practice had effectively gone long before that.

I'd just started work in 1988 and remember having strict instructions from our fleet department NOT to use unleaded fuel in my company car....a few years later when unleaded was cheaper the instruction was reversed!!!
