Been kitting the Vogue out a bit. It´s the model with the toilet compartment. I believe that this wasn´t kitted out in any way when they were sold, so I´ve been getting bits for it and trying to make it look period. A couple of old lights from the era. One 12 volt and the other 220 volt (220 over here). The 220 is incorperated into a shaving mirror and works quite well. I´ve boxed the wheel arch in so it makes a bit of storage. Oak ply, the same as the rest of the van.
The gally was a right old mess when I bought the van. No hob or cooker. Apparently some had a full cooker and others an Argyle hob. Don´t really need a cooker. The hob I´ve seen and it´s a bit plain. Recently bought a hob from the former chairman of the Period Caravan club. It´s nice and I will probably settle for it. There are a few chips on it but very presentable. Cast iron. There is another hob which, with it´s oval top grill, goes well with the oval side windows on the van. Might get one and swop when I get the urge
Link to the -oval- one which is on ebay at the moment. A pic of the one I´ve got already.

Thanks for that! Might have a punt. Thing is that the postage is so expensive that it is a bit of a gamble to spend, say, 70 pounds on the frieght and it not working or won´t go into the van in a good way. Must admit that I´ve never had a van with proper water supply (hot and cold). For this to work you need a constant water supply with pressure. Too much work and cumbersome in the Vogue I would think. To carry a lot of water about just to have it work a few mins every day is a bit of an overkill. There is a water tank built into the Vogue. Underneath, formed by the fiberglass. No use as drinking water which means you would have to have a separate source of drinking water anyway. All a bit too much really. I have a 5 liter plastic container with a tap on it for water. You can always get water outside of the van. Waste of time carrying a lot around.
It might be good for the little cottage we have. There´s no electricity but there is a well . Again, get it over here and it´s not working or needs parts....... |

The hob is up and running now. Bit of a squeeze but it worked out well. 2 kg bottle in the lpg -bucket- under the side seat. There is one on the other side. Have a battery in that.

Here are a few before I got the new cushions. Also a side from the original brochure (I luckily have 2!) showing the gally area. The first models had slide down oval windows. Mine is a later version after they made them fixed. Peter Jollys van has the slide down windows. There were 3 models. Mine with the toilet compartment, a chest of drawers insead of the toilet and a corner toilet. I believe the van that was exibited at the Earls Court Show in 1956 had the corner toilet.
Wardrobe opposite the door (gally on right of that)

Gally and offside rear
[img] [/img]
Front offside (from the door)
[img] [/img]
Looking forward from the back (toilet on left and gally-wardrobe on right)
[img] [/img]
Looking back from the front of the van. (Door, locker-toilet, back seat. Wardrobe on left). The filler cap on the little locker next to the door, is the original filling point for the water tank under the van. I´ve renovated it but not connected it.

The hinges on the doors: The first models had a stable door (and the slide down oval windows). The door on mine was in really bad condition. It had split into the outer and inner shell. The hinges had rusted away and the door -halves- chucked inside the van. I think mine should really only have 2 hinges as it´s not a stable door but copied the brochure with four hinges before I realized. Couldn´t get a decent match for the fourth -half- hinge so I took it off and now the door has three hinges [img][/img][img][/img]

Did a bit more in the van today. I´d boxed in the wheelarch but took this out to give me a bit more room to fix the hand basin. The toilet is very cramped but I managed to get a nice small basin off ebay. Attaching things to the inner, glass fiber, shell was a problem in the beginning of the renovation till I started to use the aluminium rivets with threads in them. They are really good. The basin isn´t very strong so I´ve fashioned a -hoop- from old copper piping which will give the front edge of the basin a bit more support. Will fit the hoop tomorrow and then connect up the drain etc....

Thanks for the positive comment! I´m no carpenter, the pics flatter....
Just about finished it off yesturday. The copper hoop is in place and gives good support to the rim of the basin. Connected up the drain plug and pipe and put the shelf back over the wheel arch. All that is left are 4 rings on the badge bar. These will have clothes pegs on them to hang up towels. The badges are the Cheltenham owners club (Iknow but the stag motif is really nice!), the Supermarine factory workers car club (with a stylized Spit on it), the British Caravanners Club (part of the Camping Club) and the Silver City car badge (fancy taking the car and the Vogue over to France via a Silver City Superfreighter )
Might fit a small Whale hand pump to a bottle with a couple of liters in it. Wash hands and brush teeth only.
The table and the cornisch facings are still to do. Also have a nice bakalight fan (6 volt) from the 50s and a nice light from the same period (maybe a bit earlier), to put up on the outer wardrobe wall facing forwards. I have the same light and a similar fan at the back of the van...

Well, I´ve done a bit more. This switch is on the fan it self and the round switch is for the light. Just tidy the wires in the wardrobe and that will be that. Table and pelmets left and then there won´t be much left to do but enjoy it

Great job Alan, and what a great restore. I honestly think mine is going to take all year. I will be investigating a modern water pump connected to a plastic bottle in the front gas cylinder compartment, but certainly not using a hot water heater. Like all other caravan trips, a couple of saucepans of boiling water and you have a sink of hot water (mixed with cold that is)! |
