Sad news, not only about jobs being lost but the way the whole dynamic of retailing is changing. The reason why would make an interesting debate.

I regard Comet as a name synonymous with my generation. They, along with MFI started at a time when we were putting our first home together and I listened to my parents' generation lamenting how these out of town warehouses would kill off the High Street.

Now I wouldn't be surprised if on-line sales kill off the out of town shops! That'd be a bigger problem than you might think because of the huge money tied up in retail real estate.

Comet started as a warehouse with no showroom, only a price list. Effectively things have come full circle and instead of driving to pick up your goods from Comet we are now paying a carrier to bring our goods from a warehouse. Although jobs at Comet will disappear there is probably no net loss of jobs overall. They are just in different organisations. The Post Office have just announced a big expansion of their parcel delivery arm.

John Lewis still price match other suppliers that have a shop presence.

Strange that you should mention MFI and Comet in the same sentence, why?, because the same venture capatalist company took over both these businesses for peanuts and lots of sweeteners, and then let them slide into oblivion within a very short space of time..

Starting back inthe sixties the venture capitalists (asset stripers) moved into the engineering industry. They closed the factories and sold the land for redevelopement.
