I thought it worth re-posting Richard H's post (hope you don't mind Richard) because he has noticed an interesting development on a subject I raised. Has anyone else taxed their MOT exempt car already?

In previous listings for this car (of which there have been many!) the seller states that the brakes need attention, and I'm sure there's lots of other things this car will need to get to an MOTable standard.

I'm surprised the Post Office issued the tax disc, seeing as the car isn't MOT Exempt and hasn't seen an MOT since 1996.

You can actually get legal vintage tax discs now. I chatted to the supplier at Beaulieu this year. I'd need to rake around to identify the supplier but they were in near the centre of the tents.

Peter, do you mean tax discs in a period facsimile style that are legal for the road? that seems odd.

Ah! Talking to them at Beaulieu I got the impression that you didn't need a DVLA disc but their FAQs contradict this.

It's a pity since the DVLA disc is really redundant. The police can easily verify the status of tax, MOT and insurance from your registration number.

Tax discs will still have to be displayed even if the vehicle in question is MOT Exempt, I have to have one on the tractors and engines, even though they are tax and MOT exempt.

We have just received a letter from the DVLA to say one of our cars although taxed and Mot`d has no insurance at the moment.

I renewed the multi vehicle policy covering all my vehicles in September, but knowing we would not be using this vehicle and it is in a secure building did not include it on the list of vehicles to be insured,we are selling one of the other vehicles soon so will move the cover over when that vehicle is sold.

They soon jumped on this one and although we have a tax disc have asked us to declare it sorn.

Interesting point that. It looks like we will be well advised to keep the "prixties" (pre-1960s) continuously insured rather than the continuously taxed of your average car.

Continuous insurance has been required since June 2011 unless vehicle is sorned or has not been onroad since 1998.

It will be a right pain when people want to get another car and then sell their old one, as youi either have to have 2 lots of insurance or sorn the old vehicle and transfer the existing insurance, bur then anyone wanting to buy the old car will be unable to test drive it>

I see what you mean, so anyone whose insurance expires on any taxed vehicle will be asked to SORN it and return the licence. I was just meaning that it will make sense to avoid SORNing even if you do lay-up the car in winter.
I am not sure if you still can get insurance for six months at a time but classic car insurance is so minimal that it's not likely that I will ever have it uninsured.

Hi

Some vehicles I have are asked to be sorned each year, some were declared sorned and have not been asked or told off since. any reason? Oh the ones in question have been used since 2000.

Cheers

Dave

Tried to tax again online this evening. It looks like it will only be available after the 18th. I guess it's because they would have to give out a tax disc for the whole of November.
